Life and debt by Stéphanie Black( Visual )

This documentary examines the effects of World Bank and the International Monetary Fund loans on the infrastructure Jamaica established in the wake of independence from the UK in 1962. Seven billion in debt (circa 2000), Jamaica has seen its agricultural industries laid to waste by the impossibility of competing with subsidized, multi-national American based companies. The poverty of an "average" Jamaican in a shantytown near Kingston is in stark contrast to the luxurious tropical fantasy paradise experienced by tourists in posh Montego Bay. In a dog-eat-dog global economy, the US and its multinational corporate clients have all the advantages, while Jamaica has no agriculture, no industry, and no tax base--only ever-growing debt

Rational expectations and economic policy by Stanley Fischer( Book )

22 editions published between 1980 and 1986 in English and Undetermined and held by 762 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Several areas in economics today have unprecedented significance and vitality. Most people would agree that stabilization policy ranks with the highest of these. Continuing inflation and periodic serious acceleration of inflation combined with high and secularly rising unemployment combine to give the area high priority. This book brings us up to date on an extremely lively discussion involving the role of expectations, and more particularly rational expectations, in the conduct of stabilization policy

Living standards and the wealth of nations : successes and failures in real convergence( Book )

10 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

After general discussions of the theoretical requirements for "rapid catch up" and the possible link between democracy and growth, the book presents global case studies of both non-EU and EU countries, including a provocative comparison of growth in the transition economies of the CEE (Central and Eastern Europe) nations and the 12 non-Baltic states of the former Soviet Union. It then considers nominal as opposed to real convergence in the European Monetary Union. Taken together, the chapters present a consistent argument that reliance on market forces within an open economy in a stable macroeconomic environment, with assured property rights, is the key to rapid economic growth.Offers detailed theoretical and empirical examinations of what makes for successful convergence. This book presents global case studies of both non-EU and EU countries, including a provocative comparison of growth in the transition economies of the CEE (Central and Eastern Europe) nations and the 12 non-Baltic states of the former Soviet Union.A group of prominent international economists consider what makes for successful convergence - what policies and economic conditions help poor countries catch up to the living standards of rich countries. The question of convergence, or under what conditions the per capita income levels of developing countries can catch up to those found in advanced economies, is critical for understanding economic growth and development. Convergence has happened in many countries and appears to be taking place now in China and India - yet in general per capita income levels in the poorer countries do not converge towards those of richer countries as uniformly as the analytical models predict. "Living Standards and the Wealth of Nations", which grew out of a 2003 conference on convergence hosted by the National Bank of Poland, offers detailed theoretical and empirical examinations of what makes for successful convergence

8 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The World Bank has been supporting structural adjustment in developing countries since the late 1940s. Initially, the support took the form of preparing and financing projects, especially in the are of infrastructure. By the late 1970s, however, it had become increasingly clear in many countries that correction of inappropriate policies could make a larger contribution to growth than additional investment could
The transition economies after ten years by Stanley Fischer( Book )

18 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

While output declined in virtually all transition economies in the initial years, the speed and extent of the recovery that followed has varied widely across these countries. The contrast between the more and less successfull transitions, the latter largely in former Soviet Union, raises many questions about the relative roles played by adverse initial conditions, external factors, and reform stategies. This paper summarizes the macroeconomic performance of the transition economies. We first review the initial conditions confronting these economies, the reform strategy that was proposed, and the associated controversies that arose a decade ago. We then account for the widely different outcomes, highlighting the role of exogenous factors and the macroeconomic and structural policies adopted by the countries. We find that both stabilization policies and structural reforms, particularly privatisation, contributed to the growth recovery. We also conclude that the faster is the speed of reforms, the quicker is the recovery and the higher is growth
