44 editions published between 1993 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 960 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This massive book is a novel about architecture. Conceived by Rem Koolhaas ... and Bruce Mau ... as a free-fall in the space of the typographic imagination, the book's title ... is also its framework: projects and essays are arranged according to scale. The book combines essays, manifestoes, diaries, fairy tales, travelogues, a cycle of meditations on the contemporary city, with work produced by Koolhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture over the past twenty years. This accumulation of words and images illuminates the condition of architecture today, its splendors and miseries, exploring and revealing the corrosive impact of politics, context, the economy, globalization, the world"--Back cover
Delirious New York : a retroactive manifesto for Manhattan by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

34 editions published between 1978 and 2015 in 10 languages and held by 642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since its original publication in 1978, Delirious New York has attained mythic status. Back in print in a newly designed edition, this influential cultural, architectural, and social history of New York is even more popular, selling out its first printing on publication. Rem Koolhaas's celebration and analysis of New York depicts the city as a metaphor for the incredible variety of human behavior. At the end of the nineteenth century, population, information, and technology explosions made Manhattan a laboratory for the invention and testing of a metropolitan lifestyle -- "the culture of congestion"--And its architecture. "Manhattan," he writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta Stone ... occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Koolhaas interprets and reinterprets the dynamic relationship between architecture and culture in a number of telling episodes of New York's history, including the imposition of the Manhattan grid, the creation of Coney Island, and the development of the skyscraper. Delirious New York is also packed with intriguing and fun facts and illustrated with witty watercolors and quirky archival drawings, photographs, postcards, and maps. The spirit of this visionary investigation of Manhattan equals the energy of the city itself." http://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0835/94076577-d.html

Project Japan : metabolism talks-- by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

13 editions published in 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Once there was a nation that went to war, but after they conquered a continent their own country was destroyed by atom bombs ... then the victors imposed democracy on the vanquished. For a group of apprentice architects, artists, and designers, led by a visionary, the dire situation of their country was not an obstacle but an inspiration to plan and think ... although they were very different characters, the architects worked closely together to realize their dreams, staunchly supported by a super-creative bureaucracy and an activist state ... after 15 years of incubation, they surprised the world with a new architecture--Metabolism--that proposed a radical makeover of the entire land ... Then newspapers, magazines, and TV turned the architects into heroes: thinkers and doers, thoroughly modern men ..."--Publisher's description
Elements by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

41 editions published between 2003 and 2014 in English and held by 313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Architecture is a strange mixture of persistence and flux, an amalgamation of elements -- some that have been around for over 5,000 years and others that were (re)invented yesterday. The fact that these elements change independently of each other, according to different cycles and economies, and for different reasons, turns each building into a complex collage of the archaic and the current, the site-specific and the standard, mechanical smoothness and the spontaneous. Only by looking at the elements under a wide lens can we recognize the cultural preferences, forgotten symbolism, technological advances, mutations triggered by intensifying global exchange, climatic adaptions, political calculations, regulatory requirements, new digital regimes, and, somewhere in the mix -- the ideas of the architect that constitute the practice of architecture today. A collection of these essential elements into 15 books in a package launched at the 2014 Venice Biennale that allows us to look through a microscope at the real fundamentals of our buildings and see again the essential design techniques used by any architect, anywhere, anytime

Rem Koolhaas : conversations with students by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

16 editions published between 1991 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book presents a lecture and seminar given by architect Rem Koolhaas at the Rice University School of Architecture. In this compact volume, Koolhaas addresses the urban and architectural implications of extra-large construction, using as examples three of the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)'s important large-scale projects: the Zeebrugge Ferry Terminal in Belgium, the Tres Grande Bibliotheque in Paris, and the Karlsruhe Center for Art and Media Technology in Germany. Tackling questions about the difficult state of urbanism and modernism in contemporary Europe, America, and Asia, this volume forms a concise and coherent explanation of the theories and polemics of Koolhaas and OMA. Thie book serves as an inexpensive alternative and companion to Koolhaas's S, M, L, XL."--Publisher's description

"The Fondazione Prada presents between 1 June and 3 November 2013 at Ca' Corner della Regina in Venice an exhibition entitled "When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013" curated by Germano Celant in dialogue with Thomas Demand and Rem Koolhaas. In a surprising and novel remaking, the project reconstructs "Live in Your Head. When Attitudes Become Form," a show curated by Harald Szeemann at the Bern Kunsthalle in 1969, which went down in history for the curator's radical approach to exhibition practice, conceived as a linguistic medium."--See more at: http://moussemagazine.it/55vb-fondazione-prada/#sthash.PpxmEBXE.dpuf

Preservation is overtaking us by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

7 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Preservation is Overtaking Us brings together two lectures given by Rem Koolhaas at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, along with a response (framed as a supplement to the original lectures) by Jorge Otero-Pailos. In the first essay Koolhaas describes alternative strategies for preserving Beijing, China. The second talk marks the inaugural Paul Spencer Byard lecture, named in celebration of the longtime professor of Historic Preservation at GSAPP. These two lectures trace key moments of Koolhaas' thinking on preservation, including his practice's entry into China and the commission to redevelop the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. In a format well known to Koolhaas' readers, Otero-Pailos reworks the lectures into a working manifesto, using it to interrogate OMA's work from within the discipline of preservation

The city in the city : Berlin : a green archipelago by O. M Ungers( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the manifesto 'The City in the City - Berlin: A Green Archipelago', Oswald Mathias Ungers and a number of his colleagues from Cornell University presented the first concepts and intellectual models for the shrinking city. In contrast to the reconstruction of the European city that was popular at the time, they developed the figure of a polycentric urban landscape. However, the manifesto really began to exert an effect beginning in the 1990s onwards, when the focus of the urban planning discourse turned to the examination of crises, recessions, and the phenomenon of demographic shrinking. This critical edition contains a previously unpublished version of the manifesto by Rem Koolhaas, as well as interviews with co-authors Rem Koolhaas, Peter Riemann, Hans Kollhoff, and Arthur Ovaska. Introductory texts explain the development of the manifesto between Cornell and Berlin, position the work in the planning history of Berlin, and reveal its influence on current approaches
