13 editions published between 1978 and 1991 in English and Undetermined and held by 444 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nonparametric function estimation, modeling, and simulation by James R Thompson( Book )

15 editions published in 1990 in English and Undetermined and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Topics emphasized include nonparametric density estimation as an exploratory device plus the deeper models to which the exploratory analysis points, multi-dimensional data analysis, and analysis of remote sensing data, cancer progression, chaos theory, epidemiological modeling, and parallel based algorithms. New methods discussed are quick nonparametric density estimation based techniques for resampling and simulation based estimation techniques not requiring closed form solutions

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Opens with recreation of young Valerie Taylor working with her father in his engineering business. Continues showing each scientist in a typical day's work: Valerie Taylor (Afro-American woman) is researching computer models at Northwestern University; Richard Tapia (Mexican-American) is a mathematician at Rice University; Freda Porter-Locklear (Lumbee Indian) is a mathematician at Pembroke State University and does post-doctoral research at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

A local procedure for error detection and data smoothing by Víctor Guerra( Book )

8 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this paper the authors present a local method for data smoothing which is modelled after the manual loft in the ship building industry. The method very effectively solves the outlier problem in statistics, and is superior to the well-known global procedures such as the Schoenberg-Reinsch spline algorithm when it is known that the points have only isolated errors or isolated large errors
A generalization of Newton's method with an application to the Euler-Lagrange equation by Richard A Tapia( Book )

6 editions published between 1967 and 1970 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paper presents a procedure for approximating the zeros of a nonlinear operator P from a Banach space X to a Banach space Y. This procedure is general enough to include the generalized Euler-Lagrange equation. The procedure presented is called the weak Newton method and is a generalization of L.V. Kantorovish's Newton's method
Stuck in the shallow end : education, race, and computing by Jane Margolis( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Looking at the experiences of students and teachers in three LA public high schools, this volume investigates why so few African American and Latino high school students are studying computer science
The gradient projection method and Curry's theorem by Garth P MacCormick( Book )

4 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Consider the sequence obtained by applying the gradient projection method to the problem of minimizing a continuously differentiable functional over a closed convex subset of a real Hilbert space. In this paper it is shown that if the subset is a regular subset, which includes polyhedral subsets, or the positive cone of an orthogonal set, then any cluster point of this sequence must be a constrained stationary point. These results generalize a well-known theorem, due to Curry, for unconstrained minimization in Euclidean space. (Author)
THE KANTOROVICH THEOREM by Richard A Tapia( Book )

4 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ortega has given a short and elegant proof of Kantorovich's theorem on Newton's method. In this note we add to Ortega's proof an extremely short and simple derivation of the optimum error estimates. (Author)
Computable a posteriori L[subscript infinity] error bounds for the approximate solution of two point boundary value problems by Mary Anne McCarthy( Book )

4 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

GENERALIZED SCHAUDER BASES by Richard A Tapia( Book )

4 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An attempt is made to determine the most general classes of topological linear sapces such that each member contains one of the generalized Schauder bases, using three notions of generalized Schauder bases which have appeared in the literature. The results are fairly complete with respect to separable spaces and countable bases
The weak newton method and boundary value problems by Richard A Tapia( Book )

4 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Newton-like method called the weak Newton method is described. This procedure coincides with the standard Newton-Kantorovich method whenever the latter is well-defined. The weak Newton method is applied to a large class of two point boundary value problems including the Euler-Lagrange equation for simple variational problems. The Newton-Kantorovich method is not well-defined for this class of problems. Numerical solutions to three well-known variational problems which were obtained using this procedure are included. Mathematical ship lofting by Donald A Atkins( Book )

2 editions published in 1962 in Undetermined and English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A method is presented for (a) analytically fairing a ship's hull for production purposes, beginning with the naval architect's preliminary lines drawing; (b) providing from the analytical hull form the data necessary for additional lofting."
The Kantorovich theorem and error estimates for Newton's method by Louis B Rall( Book )

3 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this note the authors derive a simple recurrence relation for the best possible error estimates the Kantorovich theorem can give for Newton's method. This formulation has, as immediate consequences, all previously derived error estimates and some improved error estimates. (Author)
SCHAUDER DIMENSION IN BANACH SPACES by Richard A Tapia( Book )

4 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A relationship between Hamel and Schauder dimension in Banach spaces is established. (Author)
Nonparametric Bayesian Estimation of Probability Densities by Function Space Techniques by Gilbert Franz Mayor de Montricher( Book )

2 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the study the author considers the problem of estimating the density function which has given rise to a random sample. As opposed to the usual approaches which assume the functional form of the density function a priori, it is assumed that the density function is contained in a broad function class with mild continuity properties. The author then constructs prior measures on the function class and obtain the corresponding posterior measures given the random sample. The function space analogues of the posterior mean and the posterior mode are explored and their consistency properties investigated. Beyond the investigation of appropriate axioms which guarantee the nonparametric implementation of Bayes Theorem, it is shown how to use abstract Wiener measure to give an algorithmic technique for the use of Bayes Theorem in a function space setting. Convergence of the Gradient Method in Normed Linear Spaces by R. H Byrd( Book )

4 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recently Golomb and Tapia defined the gradient of a (C sup 1) functional on an arbitrary normed linear space. They showed that their gradient method coincides with the known method of steepest descent and established Curry's theorem (any cluster point of the gradient sequence is a stationary point) under the assumption that the gradient operator be single valued and continuous. In this paper the authors prove Curry's theorem in the full generality of normed linear spaces. This includes many important applications in which the gradient operator is neither continuous nor single valued
