Colored people : a collaborative book project by Adrian Piper( Book )

7 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tiré du site Internet de Book Works: ""Tickled pink. Scarlet with embarrassment. Purple with anger. Blue. Green with envy. Jaundiced yellow. White with fear. Black depression." Adrian Piper's book is a collaboration with sixteen people who were asked to cut out these 'metaphorical moods' and record them as photographs which Piper then took responsibility for sorting, depending on her response to the expressions. According to Piper, the book "was intended as a light-hearted conceptual gesture with serious implications". Colored People is a project that attempts to deal with two aspects of prejudgement; those made about others and those made about art that is delimited as political as a method of containment of what else it may be about, how richly politics may be defined. Designed by John Cole."

Adrian Piper : a synthesis of intuitions, 1965-2016( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Adrian Piper has consistently produced groundbreaking work that has profoundly shaped the form and content of conceptual art since the 1960s. Strongly inflected by her longstanding involvement with philosophy and yoga, her pioneering investigations into the political, social, psychological and spiritual potential of conceptual art have had an incalculable influence on artists working today. Published in conjunction with the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date, this catalog presents more than 280 artworks that encompass the full range of Piper's mediums: works on paper, video, multimedia installation, performance, painting, sound and photo-texts. Essays by curators and scholars examine her extensive research into altered states of consciousness; the introduction of the Mythic Being - her subversive masculine alter-ego; her media and installation works from after 1980, which reveal and challenge stereotypes of race and gender; and the global conditions that illuminate the significance of her art. Previously unpublished texts by the artist lay out significant events in her personal history and her deeply felt ideas about the relationship between viewer and art object. This publication expands our understanding of the conceptual and post-conceptual art movements and Piper's pivotal position among her peers and for later generations

29th Bienal de São Paulo catalogue : there is always a cup of sea to sail in by Bienal de São Paulo( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This catalogue contains information about the 159 artists whose works will be exhibited throughout the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion and grounds between September 25 and December 12, 2010, as well as reflections on the curatorial, educational and exhibition design projects that combine as a single body to lend shape to this 29th Bienal de São Paulo. Curators Farias and Dos Anjos describe the of the exhibition objective as "to affirm that the utopian dimension to art is contained within art itself, not outside or beyond it; to affirm the value of poetic intuition in the face of tamed thought that emancipates nothing, though it permeates political parties and even formal educational institutions"--Page 21. The title refers to a line by the poet Jorge de Lima (1895 - 1953) in his work "Invençao de Orfeu" (1952), used as a metaphor to address the main topics of the event: it is impossible to separate art from politics

Out of order, out of sight by Adrian Piper( Book )

11 editions published in 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"...Out of Order, Out of Sight is an artistic and intellectual autobiography and an (occasionally scathing) commentary on mainstream art, art criticism, and American culture of the last twenty-five years. [Adrian] Piper is an internationally recognized conceptual artist and the only African American in the early conceptual art movement of the 1960s. The writings in Out of Order, Out of Sight trace the development of her thinking about her artwork and the art world, and her evolving awareness of herself as a creative, racial, and gendered subject situated in an often limiting and always absurd cultural and social context." -- Back of book
