Onéguine est invité à Saint-Pétersbourg, à la riche demeure du prince Gremine qui a épousé Tatiana. Onéguine est envahi par la passion; Tatiana est bouleversée et, craignant de faiblir, dit un adieu définitif à Onéguine qui, désespéré, reste seul pour toujours
