Faith and politics : how the "moral values" debate divides America and how to move forward together by John C Danforth( Book )

7 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 1,233 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As a three-term Republican senator from Missouri and an Episcopal priest, John Danforth has watched the changes in his party and the church with growing alarm. Now he wants to voice his concerns and call for change. Danforth speaks out clearly against the religious right's conflation of their political agenda with a religious agenda. He castigates the religious right for their focus on wedge issues that drive people apart and that create "tests" for religious orthodoxy. He looks closely at many of the major wedge issues of our day: abortion, stem cell research, gay marriage, the Schiavo case, and public displays of religion; and provides a blueprint for moving forward by calling for Christians to look ways in which they can practice their faith day to day so as to inspire a trust and focus on common ground, not fringe issues.--From publisher description
Resurrection : the confirmation of Clarence Thomas by John C Danforth( Book )

4 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 914 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Senator "Jack" Danforth is one of the most respected men in the U.S. Senate. When Clarence Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1991, Danforth gladly pledged himself to be Thomas's guide and sponsor through the customary rounds of informal interviews with key senators. A three-term senator from Missouri, Danforth believed that despite the political opposition, Thomas's hardwon rise from poverty, his integrity, and his personal record would win the Senate's confirmation. After days of arduous politicking and probing testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Danforth was sure he had the votes and that the Senate would confirm Thomas by a close but safe margin. Then, when the committee's deliberations were shattered by Anita Hill's explosive charges of sexual harassment, Thomas felt - correctly - that his enemies' goals were now not just to defeat him but to destroy him. Danforth's hopeful confidence turned to bitterness as he watched his fellow senators back off their earlier support of Thomas's nomination and their stated admiration of his character. In Resurrection, Danforth, an ordained minister, tells this story of inspiration and spiritual regeneration. It is a cautionary tale and an example of how one man and his loyal friends persevered when the world was against them and all seemed lost. But it is also the ultimate insider's own confession: Senator John C. Danforth's deeply personal revelation of how, in a good cause - that of winning a seat on the Court for his friend Clarence Thomas - he himself came very close to losing his own soul, in his anger and rage at Thomas's enemies and his willingness to do whatever it took to get Thomas confirmed

The relevance of religion : how faithful people can change politics by John C Danforth( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

-- The Relevance of Religion In the calm and wise voice of the pastor he once aspired to be, Senator Danforth argues that our shared religious values can lead us out of the embittered, entrenched state of politics today. A lifelong Republican, he calls his own party to task for its part in creating a political system in which the loudest opinions and the most polarizing personalities hold sway. And he suggests that such a system is not only unsustainable but unfaithful to our essential nature. We are built to care about other people, and this inherent altruism--which science says we crave because of our neurobiological wiring, and the Bible says is part of our created nature--is a crucial aspect of good government. Our willingness to serve more than our self-interest is religion's gift to politics, John Danforth asserts.
