Letters of the queens of England, 1100-1547 by Anne Crawford( Book )

24 editions published between 1994 and 2004 in English and held by 364 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The discussion of royalty in medieval and Tudor England has traditionally centred on the role and character of the king. By contrast, surprisingly little regard has been paid to their frequently influential and powerful consorts. This volume addresses this imbalance in a unique and illuminating manner by allowing the queens to speak for themselves through their own correspondence. Letters, many of them never previously published, are included from virtually every English queen from Matilda of Scotland, first wife of Henry I, to Katherine Parr, sixth wife of Henry VIII. Each letter is set in context by the editor, who describes the nature of the business discussed and outlines the personality of the queen concerned. Letters like that from Eleanor of Aquitaine seeking Pope Celestine's help in securing the release of her son, Richard the Lionheart, or those from Katherine of Aragon to her father, telling him of her troubles as the widow of Arthur, Prince of Wales, speak to us across the centuries. A general introduction to the volume describes the role of queens in medieval and Tudor English life, the ways in which they were selected as brides, and their relationships with their husbands and sons. Illustrated throughout and complemented by detailed genealogical tables and a useful table of marriages, The Letters of the Queens of England 1100-1547 is an invaluable reference source for historians and a fascinating introduction for the general reader to the foremost women of medieval and Tudor England
The Yorkists : the history of a dynasty by Anne Crawford( Book )

8 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Yorkist dynasty included both the most notorious king in English history, Richard III, and the most tragic, his nephew Edward V, one of the Princes in the Tower. The Yorkists gained the throne in 1461, when Edward IV, who traced his claim to Edward III, replaced the ineffectual Henry VI as king. Forced into exile in 1470 by his cousin, Warwick 'the Kingmaker', who restored Henry VI to his throne, Edward returned to power after the battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury in 1471. His reign was ended by his premature death in 1483, leaving behind a son Edward, a minor, as his heir. This led to Richard III's ursurpation of his nephew's throne. His reign was ended two years later by his defeat and death at Bosworth Field at the hands of Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII. His marriage to Elizabeth of York, the daughter of Edward IV, founded a new dynasty." "The Yorkists were one of the two main contending parties in England's first great civil war, the Wars of the Roses. They have been immortalized by Shakespeare not only in his Richard III but also in his three parts of Henry VI. Anne Crawford examines the characters of these kings and members of their family and the truths behind the stories in the plays, including the death of the Duke of Clarence by drowning in a butt of malmsey, and Richard III's celebrated murder of his nephews, Edward V and Richard, Duke of York."--Jacket

John Howard, baron Howard and first duke of Norfolk, was one of the most important men of the Yorkist period. He was a consistently loyal supporter of the Yorkist dynasty from the late 1450s until his death at Bosworth in 1485.€ He was an indefatigable royal servant, active in the military field, as an agent of the Crown at home in East Anglia, as a councillor at Westminster and as an ambassador who became England's leading envoy to France. And yet there were other men of the period, equally significant in their careers, for whom no biographies have been forthcoming. To the question - why
