The life cycle of psychological ideas understanding prominence and the dynamics of intellectual change by Thomas Carlyle Dalton ( )
22 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and held by 1,050 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book focuses on what other volumes have only touched on, that is the factors that contribute to the rise of certain persons and ideas in the field of psychology. Bringing together noted experts in the field, it describes the process of intellectual reconstructions that determines how we view historical events, and why some ideas die only to be reborn again, as well as why new ideas can quickly topple traditional views
The American Psychological Association : a historical perspective ( Book )
12 editions published between 1992 and 2009 in English and held by 665 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume, published as part of the APA [American Psychological Association] centennial celebration, demonstrates how the association evolved in response to intellectual, cultural, political, and economic historical developments. Nine chronological chapters discuss the personalities and events, the successes and failures, that molded the APA and transformed it from a small organization of 26 academician-researcher members to one of the largest professional associations in the United States and in the world, with a membership of over 100,000 academicians, scientists, and practitioners. Three other chapters offer a look at the association in terms of the role of women, of its conception of social responsibility, and of its mandate to disseminate knowledge to its own members and beyond. . . . This volume clearly demonstrates that, because the American Psychological Association began so early in the development of modern psychological thought, its history and development have been intimately bound up with the development of the field as a whole. A text-book of psychology by Edward Bradford Titchener ( Book )
1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The present work has been written to take the place of my Outline of Psychology. The Outline, which was stereotyped in 1896, had long passed beyond the possibility of revision, and the continued demand for it showed that there was still room in the science for a text-book which set experimental methods and experimental results in the forefront of discussion. I should have preferred, however ungratefully, to let the book die its natural death; for I feared that it would be impossible to recover the freshness and vigour of the first writing, and I knew that another issue would lay an oppressive tax upon future time and energy. But colleagues and pupils and publisher were insistent, and I finally decided to rewrite. The Text-book follows, in general, the lines laid down in the Outline. The only point that calls for special mention here is, perhaps, the scant space accorded to nervous physiology. I have always held that the student should get his elementary knowledge of the nervous system, not from the psychologist, but from the physiologist; the teacher of psychology needs all the time at his disposal for his own science. It is true that psychology, if it is to be explanatory, must supplement the description of mental processes by a statement of their physiological conditions"--Preface. Systematic psychology: prolegomena by Edward Bradford Titchener ( Book )
1 edition published in 1972 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
"(From the preface) In the early summer of 1917, Professor Titchener began writing his Systematic Psychology--a book long projected. The book was to be his final word on the establishment of scientific psychology, coordinate with biology and physics; in a very concrete sense, it was to be a summing up of the reading, thinking, and experimental investigation in psychology which had occupied him during his entire professional life."--(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved)
