This study examines the history of the Telharmonium, the first comprehensive electric music synthesizer. The concept was developed by Thaddeus Cahill in 1893, who reasoned that an electrical generating plant of ac dynamos would possess the best attributes of all musical instruments. A central station sending music along wires to thousands of places simultaneously could replace numerous musicians. Cahill applied for his first patent in 1895; five were eventually granted
