"Affinities of Form: Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas examines the motives that led Raymond Wielgus to become a collector and that guided him to his chosen field. Wielgus originally made his name as a maker of high-quality prototype models for potential new products in the manufacturing industry, and the book shows how the very special experience gained in this profession molded his view of the art of collecting. It lists the criteria that he applied to the objects to be included in the collection and assesses the importance of the skill with which they were eventually displayed. The collection spans in excess of three thousand years of ethnographic art and contains exquisite masterpieces produced by the indigenous peoples of Africa, the islands of the Pacific, and the Americas."--BOOK JACKET. "The book starts by analyzing the sources of the objects amassed since the dawn of collecting ethnographic objects in the early 1800s and discusses how representative they are of their cultures of origin. It puts the Wielgus collection in context with other notable collections. The text honestly acknowledges the probable damage that enthusiastic collecting has inflicted upon some of the sites from which these artifacts derive, but argues that this has been in part offset by the spread of knowledge through the literature published on the great collections."--BOOK JACKET. "One hundred of the most important objects from the Wielgus collection are illustrated in color. The photography employs dramatic use of light and shade, excitingly conveying the visual power of these beautiful objects. The illustrations are divided into three sections: Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, and the provenance and importance of each is analyzed in the context of the history of the respective geographical regions."--BOOK JACKET
Ancient jewelry and archaeology ( Book )
3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 255 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Jewelry is one of the most appealing artistic achievements of antiquity, but it is at the same time one of the least understood. Ancient Jewelry and Archaeology presents state-of-the-art scholarship on the manufacture, aesthetics, and uses of jewelry in the ancient world. Featuring the work of an outstanding group of international scholars from the fields of archaeology, art history, epigraphy, conservation, and museum scholarship, the book places the material evidence of specific artifacts into their social, economic, religious, and political milieux. The archaeological and art historical contexts in which jewelry is studied combine with aspects of technology and production, style, and iconography to achieve a full historical view of the role of jewelry in the ancient world. The book highlights several important jewelry collections and recent archaeological investigations

Barry Gealt : embracing nature : landscape paintings 1988-2012 by Rachel Berenson Perry ( Book )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Barry Gealt's nature paintings, with their thick layers of pigment and saturated colors, evoke the drama of place - purple waves splashing over shell-pink sands, mossy rocks protruding among twisting water surfaces, the windless mists of Indiana mornings, and the hush and rustle of winter woods. This beautiful retrospective catalog presents forty of Gealt's works, mostly large oil-on-panel paintings, from 1985 through 2012. Rachel Berenson Perry traces Gealt's art-making life from his early experiments with figurative painting through the evolution of his abstract, forceful, almost sculptural landscape style. Perry also discusses Gealt's long career as a dedicated teacher and mentor to his many students in the painting program at Indiana University from 1969 until his retirement in 2007. 0Exhibition: Indiana University Art Museum, Bloomington, USA (6.10.-23.12.2012). 0
