The Faerie Queene is one of the great seminal masterpieces of English literature, and has influenced, inspired and challenged generations of writers, readers and scholars since its completion in 1596. Its vigorous narrative and colorful descriptions make it appear superficially one of the most accessible of major works; but it is perhaps the hardest of all to come to grips with, because of its epic length, its prodigality of incident and detail, the complexity of its allegory and the richness of its topical allusions. Few works so much demand or repay introduction and annotation - yet there had been no adequate complete critical edition available for the scholar, student or general reader until Professor Hamilton's edition, itself a work of major scholarship, appeared in 1977. It provides exceptionally full and careful annotation of the text, detailed guidance to critical comment past and present, and a wealth of introductory material setting the poem in its full historical and literary context. Now the eagerly-awaited paperback version makes the full richness and intricacy of the great poem accessible to students and poetry lovers everywhere. -- from back cover

"'The Faerie Queene' is an incomplete English epic poem by Edmund Spenser. The first half was published in 1590, and a second installment was published in 1596. 'The Faerie Queene' is notable for its form: it is one of the longest poems in the English language and the origin of a verse form that came to be known as Spenserian stanza. It is an allegorical work, and can be read (as Spenser presumably intended) on several levels of allegory, including as praise of Queen Elizabeth I. In a completely allegorical context, the poem follows several knights in an examination of several virtues. In Spenser's 'Letter of the Authors,' he states that the entire epic poem is 'cloudily enwrapped in allegorical devices,' and that the aim of publishing 'The Faerie Queene' was to 'fashion a gentleman or noble person in virtuous and gentle discipline'"--Wikipedia, viewed on November 4, 2015

This new edition addresses the shifts in scholarly and critical interests in Spenser studies since 1993 as well as access provided by new technology. Notes reflect the information that Spenser's best readers would have at their fingertips without spoiling the pleasure of reading Spenser for the first time. Mother Hubberds Tale from the 1591 Complaints is newly included. The Ruines of Rome, Spenser's translation of Joachim Du Bellay's Antiquitez, is also added to give readers the chance to see Spenser at work as a translator and to give the English perspective on Rome. Sixteen critical essays have been added to supplement fourteen earlier commentaries. Among the perspectives new to the Fourth Edition are those of C. S Lewis, Martha Craig, Gordon Teskey, Jeff Dolven, David Wilson-Okamura, and Jennifer Summit. In keeping with the last edition, critical pieces on the House of Busyrane, Spenser's pastoral, Muiopotmos, and Amoretti are grouped together to facilitate classroom discussion. New selections from Jane Grogan, Andrew D. Hadfield, Colin Burrow, Lynn Staley, Lauren Silberman, and A. E. B. Coldiron join the readings on House of Busyrane, and "Amoretti" grows with selections by A. Leigh DeNeef and Helena Mennie Shire
