Bonding study on layered soil-cement by Glenn DeGroot( Book )

1 edition published in 1976 in English and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study of variables which might affect the bond between layers of soil-cement was performed. Absence of bond or poor bond has resulted in increased distress on at least one soil-cement slope resulted in increased distress on at least one soil-cement slope facing. The bond developed between layers was measured in direct shear with zero applied normal load. Specimens were tested without special lift line treatments or additives. The analyses indicate the following results: (1) Increased time delay between lifts decreases the bond, (2) High frequency of watering the life line decreases the bond, (3) Moist curing conditions between lift placements increases the bond, and (4) removing the smooth compaction plane increases the bond. Testing was also performed on samples which had special lift or mix additives. The following conclusions are made from a comparison with the bond strengths obtained on similar specimens without treatment: (1) Set retardant decreased the bond at 4-hour time delay, (2) Asphalt and chlorinated rubber curing compounds decreased the bond, and (3) A small amount of cement on the lift line bonded the layers together. Nearly all of the specimens with cement lift line treatment broke at a plane other than the life line. This indicates that the life line is stronger than the remainder of the specimen since direct shear specimens fail on the weakest plane
