Historical introduction to modern psychology by Gardner Murphy ( Book )
103 editions published between 1928 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,575 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Psychology, in the sense of reflection upon the nature and activities of mind, is a very ancient discipline, one which reached great heights in ancient Greece and has continued (in intimate relation with philosophy) with every phase of European civilization. During the nineteenth century this literary and philosophic psychology underwent profound changes, chiefly as a result of the progress of biology, from which both concepts and methods were freely borrowed. Many of its greatest students began to rely upon experimental and mathematical method, believing that psychology could become a science akin to other biological sciences. It is the purpose of this volume to trace the course of those changes in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries which have thus tended to transform psychology and to give it its present character. This text presents a detailed history of modern psychology not limited to the experimental tradition. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved)

An outline of abnormal psychology by Gardner Murphy ( Book )
21 editions published between 1929 and 2007 in English and Spanish and held by 953 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Abnormal psychology has three main divisions. The first is the study of mental abnormality in immediate relation to disturbances in the body (especially in the brain). The second is the study of patients suffering from more or less serious mental disease, whose condition necessitates not so much an emphasis upon bodily factors as a careful examination of their background and the psychological factors which underlie their trouble. Naturally there lies between these two a large debatable territory in which sometimes a physical and sometimes a psychological approach seems required. We may, if we wish, disregard the distinction, and call the region covered by the first two provinces by the name of psychiatry ("healing of the mind"). Our third province includes the study of a great variety of normal or almost-normal phenomena which throw light upon the abnormal, and the thousand transitional states between the definitely normal and the definitely abnormal. The chief purposes of this volume are first, to give the reader an introduction to some common forms of mental disorder which are understandable in terms of psychological principles, and second, to indicate some of the paths which lead from the normal to the abnormal, and--fortunately--often lead back again to the Normal." Development of the perceptual world by Charles M Solley ( Book )
19 editions published between 1960 and 1967 in English and Undetermined and held by 888 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book consists of two major parts. The first presents our theoretical arguments on perceptual learning; the second, an analysis of the molar components of the perceptual act and of how these components are altered through learning. We have tried to be scholarly without being pedantic; we have tried to cover all major experimental procedures that have been used, but not necessarily all articles, since many studies repeat the same procedures. We have attempted to present procedures in general, but we have not aimed at giving all the details of presented studies. Specific experimental details can be found in the articles to which we refer. We have not tried to present the various theories of perceptual learning, although we find in retrospect that we have used some of the important ideas of such men as Brunswik, Gibson, Helson, Hilgard, Koffka, Piaget, and Woodworth, among others. Although our approach differs considerably from the approach used by each of these men, we have found constant inspiration in their writings; we can scarcely discharge our debt of gratitude"--Preface. In the minds of men : the study of human behavior and social tensions in India by Gardner Murphy ( Book )
25 editions published between 1953 and 1955 in English and Undetermined and held by 805 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In 1949 the Ministry of Education, Government of India, asked UNESCO to make available to it a consultant who would spend six months in India organizing research teams to explore the reasons for "social tensions." UNESCO sent me to India for this purpose in 1950. The technical reports of the research teams which were set up have been submitted to the Government of India, and some or all of them will be published. It was, however, felt both by the Ministry of Education and by Mrs. Alva Myrdal, Director of the Social Sciences Department of UNESCO, that there was also a need for a nontechnical report of my impressions regarding social tensions in India and regarding the many constructive forces working for national unity. The present volume is my attempt to respond to this request. I do so on the understanding that the reader will at every point recall that I went to India simply as a technical consultant on research methods; that I am not an expert on India; and that I offer my observations and recommendations for whatever little they are worth, hoping that those better informed than I can develop them into something useful to India. Personality; a biosocial approach to origins and structure by Gardner Murphy ( Book )
28 editions published between 1947 and 1974 in English and held by 544 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In writing this book the aim of the author is to write about personality in such a way as to help in clarifying the little that we know and to show its possible relations to the vast and confused domain that we do not yet understand. The best way to attempt the exploration, perhaps, is to write in terms of the foci of present research, expanding fanwise, through hypotheses. This book, then, if at all successful in its aim, will be a companion for the investigator who likes to see problems defined in terms of directions in which they might lead; an explorer's kit, containing, to be sure, some standard tools, and also some maps. Throughout the volume the approach to personality is made chiefly in terms of origins and modes of development on the one hand, interrelations or structural problems on the other. It is hoped that some of the present chapters will, by raising questions, whet the reader's appetite for clinical and therapeutic literature. This is not a book on diagnosis or therapy of personality problems, or upon any type of clinical approach. It is simply an attempt at evaluation of data on how personality grows.
