Journal to Stella by Jonathan Swift( Book )

"The Journal to Stella offers a detailed commentary on Swift's experiences in London in the last years of Queen Anne's reign, and substantial evidence of his evolving relationship with Esther Johnson, or Stella. This new edition seeks for the first time both to situate the text alongside Swift's other works, and to draw on recent scholarship on the period to offer commentary and annotation, which will place it within its original political, historical and cultural contexts. It offers transcriptions of the manuscript portion of the letters, based on the latest digital image analysis techniques. These will represent the text for the first time, complete with his purposeful obliterations. In addition to a new critical introduction and appendices, there is also a biographical appendix derived from recently available resources from the History of Parliament, Irish History of Parliament and ODNB projects"--

A tale of a tub by Jonathan Swift( Book )

212 editions published between 1704 and 2018 in 6 languages and held by 579 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Published anonymously in 1704, this prose satire by the author of Gulliver's Travelspresents a story of three brothers, each symbolizing a Christian sect, and an unrelated series of digressions. The "tale" portion centers on Peter, Martin, and Jack, who respectively represent Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism, and other dissenting Protestant sects. Charged with maintaining their coats -- the Christian faith -- exactly as issued, the brothers immediately proceed to make alterations. Jonathan Swift's historical allegory ridicules the conflicts between religious factions, and his digressions offer ironic views of contemporary trends in literature, politics, and theology. Swift's assault on the corruption of the ancient church and the fanaticism of reformers was widely misunderstood at the time of its publication, when England's religion and government were closely linked, causing the author endless problems with churchmen and politicians alike. Acerbic in style and exuberantly witty, A Tale of a Tub remains a powerful parody that ranks among the English language's best satires"--

While things were in this ferment, discord grew extremely high; hot words passed on both sides, and ill blood was plentifully bred. Here a solitary Ancient, squeezed up among a whole shelf of Moderns, offered fairly to dispute the case, and to prove by manifest reason that the priority was due to them from long possession, and in regard of their prudence, antiquity, and, above all, their great merits toward the Moderns. Remarks on the life and writings of Dr. Jonathan Swift by John Boyle Orrery( Book )

8 editions published between 1752 and 2005 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1751, Remarks on the Life and Writings of Dr. Jonathan Swift, by John Boyle, Fifth Earl of Cork and Orrery, was published and immediately became a best-seller. Despite its importance as the earliest biographical account of Swift, it had not been closely studied by scholars except for A.C. Elias Jr., who was the first to ascertain which was the earliest printing of the work as well as Orrery's personal involvement with textual corrections. This volume is based on Elias's pioneering research and editor Joao Froes establishes the best text of the book, which had undergone several editions in London and Ireland, not all of which had been known." "Froes's introduction offers a history of the composition, publication, and contemporary reception of Orrery's book, including a section that presents complete bibliographical descriptions of all the editions, their textual quality, the locations where copies of those editions can be found, their collation, and analyses of the individual editions. Also included is a section that fully describes the copies of the work extensively annotated by Orrery."--Jacket

Swift by Leslie Stephen( Book )

2 editions published between 1882 and 2011 in Undetermined and English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sir Leslie Stephen (1832-1904) came from a distinguished family of politicians, jurists and writers, and was the father of Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf. His literary career began with writing about his great passion, the Alps, and he became a noted author and critic, and the first editor of the Dictionary of National Biography. He was a friend of John Morley (1838-1923), the general editor of English Men of Letters, who commissioned him to write three biographies for the first series, on Swift, Pope and Johnson. Stephen is very interested in the family connections and history of Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), the great satirist and moralist, and he blends direct sources with general conclusions in an informal style which makes the work (first published in 1882) of continuing interest today. Stephen's Sketches from Cambridge, published anonymously in 1865, is also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection
