Part-title "The Guermantes Way" includes the aristocratic, Faubourg Saint-Germain world to which Proust aspired. With part-title "The Artists' and Writers' Way" come the Bergotte of Anatole France and actresses with whom he became romatically involved. The closing section is the self-portrait of Paul Nadar, son fo Felix Nadar, the legendary avant-gardist in whose studio the Impressionists had held their first exhibition

"Ou comment l'héritier d'une maison réputée, fort de la dernière invention d'Eastman - les premiers appareils Kodak à films à rouleaux -, s'aventure sur la ligne russe du Transcaspien au moment même où Jules Verne se lance dans la rédaction d'un roman consacré précisément à ce nouveau réseau ferroviaire. L'Exposition universelle de Paris en 1889 permet à Paul Nadar de rencontrer George Eastman, dont il a adopté et commercialisé les productions. Paul décide de tester ces nouveaux petits appareils de photographie instantanée, le Kodak et son propre Détective Nadar, dans un périple aventureux qui fait de lui l'émule des explorateurs qu'il a vu défiler dans l'atelier familial, comme Mariette et Savorgnan de Brazza. Arrivé à Constantinople par l'Orient-Express le 17 août 1890, il traverse la mer Noire, le Caucase ..., parcourt deux mois durant le Turkestan russe et en rapporte une moisson de clichés d'une étonnante modernité. Ce très bel ouvrage invite le lecteur à découvrir l'odyssée de ce précurseur du reportage, commentée par lui-même ou ses compagnons de voyage, ou bien encore par le petit journaliste de Jules Verne, Claudius Bombarnac
