An introduction to corpus linguistics by Graeme D Kennedy( Book )

31 editions published between 1998 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 391 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The use of large, computerized bodies of text for linguistic analysis and description has emerged in recent years as one of the most significant and rapidly-developing fields of activity in the study of language. This book provides a comprehensive introduction and guide to Corpus Linguistics. All aspects of the field are explored, from the various types of electronic corpora that are available to instructions on how to design and compile a corpus. Graeme Kennedy surveys the development of corpora for use in linguistic research, looking back to the pre-electronic age as well as to the massive growth of computer corpora in the electronic age."--Jacket
The New Zealand Oxford dictionary by Tony Deverson( Book )

17 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The New Zealand Oxford Dictionary is the first large-scale English dictionary especially prepared for New Zealand users. It contains entries for over 100,000 general English words and meanings of the kind found in works such as The Concise Oxford Dictionary, along with some 10,000 distinctive New Zealandisms of the kind found in the late Harry Orsman's Dictionary of New Zealand English (DNZE)." "The New Zealand Oxford Dictionary, like the works it derives from, is an 'encyclopedic' dictionary - that is, in addition to entries for words, compounds, idioms, and derivatives (providing information about the general vocabulary of English), it also includes more than 10,000 encyclopedic entries (providing information about the world, especially its notable persons and places). The biographical entries not only give the important facts about a person's life and work, but also place their life and achievements in the context of their particular field or historical period. The place-name entries not only locate the place in question, but also provide detail about the character of the place and its historical, economic, or political importance. Longer articles are provided for countries and major regions and cities." "Other proper-name entries cover a wide range of topics; they include, for example, entries on political parties, religious organisations, historical events, celestial bodies, and mythological and fictional characters." "Users of dictionaries increasingly seek guidance on matters of controversial or disputed usage. This dictionary contains more than 500 usage notes dealing with such matters. These are visually highlighted in the text."

"Come island hop with me through the Samoas to the Cooks, Tonga, and Niue - and on to the many French Pacific possessions including remote Wallis and Futuna. I have found after almost 40 years of travel through these islands that a great sense of pride and acceptance of newcomers continues to be expressed by the local populations to those who make the effort to become a part of their beautiful world. The expats who live here continue to work in lands they no longer call foreign. Many marry locals, most drink in the downtown bars, and they all tell their stories. Yes, their stories - hilarious, heart-breaking, or thought-provoking - it is difficult to know where fact ends and fiction begins, but all are unforgettable and all are true to the raconteur"--Back cover
Children's comprehension of English sentences comparing quantities of discrete objects by Graeme D Kennedy( )

3 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A conceptual category approach to the study of the comprehension of natural language is presented as an alternative to previous approaches made solely in terms of information gain or specific linguistic variables. Elementary school children between the ages of 6 and 11 years were given a referent identification task to test their comprehension of 32 sentences containing a representative selection of the linguistic devices used in English for comparing quantities of discrete objects. The results showed that at grade 1 level, children still have remarkably poor comprehension of these devices. Comprehension of comparatives increases significantly until at least grade 3, and comprehension becomes easier at least until the end of elementary school as indicated by significantly shorter response latencies. This study also clarified other aspects of the comprehension of these linguistic devices. For example, it was found that comparisons made in terms of equality using "positive" adjectives (E.G., "as large as") were significantly easier than comparisons using "negative" adjectives (E.G., as small as"). A significant interaction between age and the relative difficulty of negation was found. Implications of this approach for research in developmental psycholinguistics, second language teaching, and the preparation of materials are discussed. (Author/DD)

Children's comprehension of natural language by Graeme D Kennedy( Book )

3 editions published between 1970 and 1971 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper reviews current literature concerning the development of children's comprehension of the processes of natural languages and it recommends a new study approach designed to evaluate the joint effects of lexical and syntactic devices on comprehension. It discusses three main kinds of investigations--studies of the comprehension of individual words and suprasegmentals, studies of information gain, and studies of the comprehension of syntactic processes--as well as testing techniques and the specific syntactic and morphological processes considered. Results of particular studies are given. The second part of the paper covers the necessity of treating language as a structure rather than as individual words when testing comprehension, and it recommends a conceptual-category approach which considers the relationship between formal linguistic processes and cognitive relations by showing how well language is comprehended in specific language-use situations. Manufacturing process optimization for improved failure performance of thick composite structures by Graeme D Kennedy( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A method is presented for finding the optimal autoclave temperature history for pre-impregnated thermoset composites based on their failure performance. A coupled finite element model which incorporates a thermo-chemical and incremental elastic analysis is used to predict the residual stress distribution at the edge of a thick composite beam. The optimal autoclave temperature is sought by formulating an objective function and an associated set of constraints. The objective is designed to maximize the minimum failure load of the manufactured beam amongst a set of load cases, while the constraints are imposed to ensure that the composite is uniformly cured and does not sustain temperature damage during the manufacturing process. A novel semi-analytic gradient evaluation technique is developed which incorporates elements of the adjoint and direct sensitivity methods. Initial results show that significant improvements in the failure load can be achieved for certain beam constructions
