Economic philosophy by Joan Robinson( Book )

""Economics has always been partly a vehicle for the ruling ideology of each period as well as partly a method of scientific investigation. It limps along with one foot in untested hypotheses and the other in untestable slogans. Here our task is to sort out, as best we may, this mixture of ideology and science."" "With these provocative words, Joan Robinson introduces this lively and iconoclastic book. "In what follows," she says, "this theme is illustrated by reference to one or two of the leading ideas of the economists from Adam Smith onwards, not in a learned manner, tracing the development of thought, nor historically, to show how ideas arose out of the problems of each age, but rather in an attempt to puzzle out the mysterious way that metaphysical propositions, without any logical content, can yet be a powerful influence on thought and action."" "Robinson is responsible for some of the most austerely professional contributions to economic theory, but here, in effect, she takes the reader behind the scenes and cheerfully exposes the dogmatic content of economic orthodoxy. In its place, she offers the possibility that with obsolete metaphysics cleared out of the way, economics can make a substantial advance toward science. Book jacket."--Jacket

Economic heresies; some old-fashioned questions in economic theory by Joan Robinson( Book )

37 editions published between 1971 and 1976 in 3 languages and held by 1,137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What has happened to economic theory? Why, more than a generation since the Keynesian liberation, is the "old theology" closing in again? One of the world's great economists, herself a leading Keynesian during the 1930s, here attacks with her customary wit and lucidity the new (Keynesian) economic orthodoxy, which, she argues convincingly, is nothing but old neo-classical orthodoxy supported by Keynesian policies designed to keep investment at full-employment levels. But the "old-fashioned questions" remain, and the new orthodoxy is now coming to a crisis, as one of its cardinal assumptions - the belief that the form of investment is controlled by the principle of maximizing social welfare - is being discredited by growing public awareness of the prevalence of poverty (even hunger), urban decay, and polluted environments in the wealthiest nations. What is needed, and what Professor Robinson's book provides, is a new look at the theory of value, distribution and accumulation. Applying analyses derived from von Neumann, Sraffa, and Kalecki, her volume proposes a fundamental reorientation of economic theory designed to clear away the fog of orthodox obfuscation and enable us to see the problems of modern life as they are

Aspects of development and underdevelopment by Joan Robinson( Book )

32 editions published between 1979 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 990 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Counter Joan Robinson shows how the economic mechanisms that produce wealth in the midst of growing misery can be understood. For this purpose she uses the classical theory of accumulation and the modern theory of international trade and finance. Her simple but penetrating analysis illuminates the problems of poverty, accumulation, industrialisation and trade, while exposing misleading conceptions of the Third World. Throughout the book, general principles are demonstrated with particular examples, making those principles both clearer and more relevant. The book's conclusion is that the economic problems of the Third World remain rooted in deep-seated political conflicts of national and international interests
