Catulli Veronensis Liber by Gaius Valerius Catullus( Book )

176 editions published between 1862 and 2010 in 5 languages and held by 1,464 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The title of this work literally means The Book of Catullus of Verona and is a careful perusal by Robinson Ellis of the oeuvre of the Roman poet, who is generally thought to have lived between 84 and 54 BCE. In this second edition of 1878, Ellis (1834-1913), whose monumental Commentary on Catullus is also reissued in this series, demonstrates the ancestry of the text of the poems established by Renaissance scholars from the surviving manuscript variants, supplying a text with suggested readings and emendations and a nearly complete listing of citations or references that have been made to Catullus throughout the centuries, and engaging with the work of fellow scholars Ribbeck and Westphal. Ellis offers a detailed reading of the construction of the poet's engaging verse and supports the identification of the 'Lesbia' of whom Catullus writes so glowingly and passionately with Clodia Metelli

Carmina by Gaius Valerius Catullus( Book )

299 editions published between 1473 and 2015 in 9 languages and held by 1,270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Catullus is a companion of lovers and of those whom love has disappointed. He is also a satirical and epigrammatic writer who savagely consoles with laughter. Carmina captures in English both the mordant, scathing wit and also the concise tenderness, the famous love for reluctant Lesbia who is made present in these new versions. A range of English metres and rhymes evokes the many modes and moods of this most engaging, erotic and influential of Latin poets. Of Len Krisak's translations of Horace, Frederic Raphael writes, '[He] enables us both to enjoy a fresh voice and to hear (and see), very distinctly, what lies behind and within his unintimidated rescripts'. Again in Carmina Krisak works his precise magic."
The student's Catullus by Gaius Valerius Catullus( )

21 editions published between 1989 and 2012 in English and Latin and held by 1,171 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Student's Catullus places its emphasis on understanding the original Latin text rather than merely translating it into English. A complete Latin-English vocabulary explains the meaning of Catullus' words; notes to each poem illuminate the meaning of his language, with explanations of word choice, word order, sound effects, and metric artistry. Historical and literary allusions are also explained, with the result that students enter deeper into the poet's world than the best English translation can suggest. The Student's Catullus makes it clear why we still read Catullus in Latin." "Written to become the standard college textbook as well as a comprehensive reference, the book includes a brief introduction setting forth the known facts about the poet's life and the character of his poems, a fresh recension of all 113 poems, and a commentary in English on each poem, explaining difficult points of Latin, features of Catullus' artistry, and background information. Additional aids to the reader are a Who's Who of the most important people in Catullus' poems, an introduction to Catullan meters, a glossary of literary terms used in the commentary, a complete Catullan vocabulary, and six maps."--BOOK JACKET
The poems of Catullus by Gaius Valerius Catullus( Book )

112 editions published between 1861 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 940 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written in the twilight of the Roman Republic, the poetry of Gaius Valerius Catullus offers a delicious insight into the passions and gossip of high Roman society. From the poet and his friends to cultural and political titans, including Caesar, Cicero, and Pompey, his cutting, modern verse spares no-one. In this new translation by Daisy Dunn, author of Catullus' Bedspread, his obscene honesty, arrogant wit and surprising tenderness capture Roman society at their best. Most famous for his obsessive love lyrics for the married Lesbia, Catullus' words are an immortal expression of youth, rebellion and agonised love
