The mind of a mnemonist; a little book about a vast memory by A. R Lurii︠a︡( Book )

60 editions published between 1960 and 2002 in English and held by 1,537 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A welcome re-issue of an English translation of Alexander Luria's famous case-history of hypermnestic man. The study remains the classic paradigm of what Luria called 'romantic science,' a genre characterized by individual portraiture based on an assessment of operative psychological processes. The opening section analyses in some detail the subject's extraordinary capacity for recall and demonstrates the association between the persistence of iconic memory and a highly developed synaesthesia. The remainder of the book deals with the subject's construction of the world, his mental strengths and weaknesses, his control of behaviour and his personality. The result is a contribution to literature as well as to science. (Psychological Medicine )

The working brain; an introduction to neuropsychology by A. R Lurii︠a︡( Book )

57 editions published between 1973 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This important book, by the most distinguished Soviet psychologist of our time, is the product of almost forty years of extensive research aimed at understanding the cerebral basis of human psychological activity. The main part of the book describes what we know today about the individual systems that make up the human brain and about the role of the individual zones of the cerebral hemispheres in the task of providing the necessary conditions for higher forms of mental activity to take place. Finally, Luria analyzes the cerebral organization of perception and action, of attention and memory, or speech and intellectual processes, and attempts to fit the facts obtained by neuropsychological studies of individual brain systems into their appropriate place in the grand design of psychological science
Speech and the development of mental processes in the child: an experimental investigation by A. R Lurii︠a︡( Book )

131 editions published between 1956 and 1982 in 8 languages and held by 1,109 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The hypothesis, that the importance of language to mankind lies not so much in the fact that it is the means by which we cooperate and communicate with each other as in the fact that it enables each of us, as individuals and in cooperation, to represent the world to ourselves as we encounter it, is presented. In infancy, the representation is made in talk. The point is made that as we grow older we continue to talk as a means of representing the world; we also write and think. Piaget and Bruner have shown that children represent the world to themselves first in terms of perception-cum-movement. At about two years of age, the linguistic mode comes into operation. This document is concerned both with what the use of language may import into a situation and the way it does so. It is divided into eight chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the role played by speech in the formation of the child's mental processes; in Chapter 2, the methods of studying this role are examined. Chapters 3 through 7 discuss the case of speech-retarded twins. Chapter 8 concludes that with the creation of an objective necessity for speech communication, the children (I.E., the twins) were satisfactorily prepared for the acquisition of a language system; not only did they develop new forms of communication with the aid of developing verbal speech, but also there were called forth significant changes in the structure of their conscious activity. Russian psychologists A.R. Luria presents a compelling portrait of a man's heroic struggle to regain his mental faculties. Studies on the history of behavior : ape, primitive, and child by L. S Vygotskiĭ( Book )

17 editions published between 1993 and 2013 in English and held by 572 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The surge of contemporary interest in Vygotsky's contribution to child psychology has focused largely on his developmental method and his claim that higher psychological functions in the individual emerge out of social processes, that is, his notion of the ""zone of proximal development."" Insufficient attention has been given to his claim that human social and psychological processes are shaped by cultural tools or mediational means. This book is one of the most important documents for understanding this claim. Making a timely appearance, this volume speaks directly to the present cris
