Selected tales by Edgar Allan Poe( )

104 editions published between 1908 and 2011 in 5 languages and held by 3,292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic tales have established themselves as classics of horror fiction, and as the inventor of the modern mystery, Poe created many of the conventions which still dominate the genre of detective fiction. Attentive to the historical and political dimensions of these very American tales, this new selection of twenty-four tales places the most popular, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of the Red Death, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Purloined Letter--alongside less well-known travel narratives, metaphysical essays, and political satires
William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe( )

42 editions published between 1839 and 2018 in 9 languages and held by 3,273 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The story follows a man of noble descent who calls himself William Wilson because, although denouncing his past, he does not accept responsibilities blame for his actions, saying that "man was never thus [...] tempted before." After several paragraphs, the narration then segues into a description of Wilson's boyhood, which was spent in a school "in a misty-looking village of England." William meets another boy in his school who shared the same name, who had roughly the same appearance, and who was even born on exactly the same date. William's name (he asserts that his actual name is only similar to "William Wilson") embarrasses him because it sounds "plebeian" or common, and he is irked that he must hear the name twice as much on account of the other William
The mystery of Marie Rogêt by Edgar Allan Poe( )

42 editions published between 1899 and 2018 in 4 languages and held by 3,269 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When the body of Marie Rogt̊ is found in the Seine River, detective C. Auguste Dupin uses his superior deductive skills to discover the identity of the murderer. "The Mystery of Marie Rogt̊" is based in part on the actual murder of Mary Cecilia Rogers in New York in the mid-nineteenth century, and is believed to be the first example of real-life crime used as a foundation for fictional narrative. A pioneer of the short story genre, Poe's stories typically captured themes of the macabre and included elements of the mysterious. His better-known stories include "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Tell-Tale Heart"

He describes her beauty at length, despite not being able to see her well; he requires spectacles but, in his vanity "resolutely refused to employ them."
