Linear partial differential operators by Lars Hörmander( Book )

94 editions published between 1963 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 1,266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this book is to give a systematic study of questions con cerning existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions of linear partial differential equations and boundary problems. Let us note explicitly that this program does not contain such topics as eigenfunction expan sions, although we do give the main facts concerning differential operators which are required for their study. The restriction to linear equations also means that the trouble of achieving minimal assumptions concerning the smoothness of the coefficients of the differential equations studied would not be worth while; we usually assume that they are infinitely differenti able. Functional analysis and distribution theory form the framework for the theory developed here. However, only classical results of functional analysis are used. The terminology employed is that of BOURBAKI. To make the exposition self-contained we present in Chapter I the elements of distribution theory that are required. With the possible exception of section 1.8, this introductory chapter should be bypassed by a reader who is already familiar with distribution theory
Notions of convexity by Lars Hörmander( )

37 editions published between 1994 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 857 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first two chapters of this book are devoted to convexity in the classical sense, for functions of one and several real variables respectively. This gives a background for the study in the following chapters of related notions which occur in the theory of linear partial differential equations and complex analysis such as (pluri- )subharmonic functions, pseudoconvex sets, and sets which are convex for supports or singular supports with respect to a differential operator. In addition, the convexity conditions which are relevant for local or global existence of holomorphic differential equations are discussed, leading up to Trpreaus theorem on sufficiency of condition (capital Greek letter Psi) for microlocal solvability in the analytic category. At the beginning of the book, no prerequisites are assumed beyond calculus and linear algebra. Later on, basic facts from distribution theory and functional analysis are needed. In a few places, a more extensive background in differential geometry or pseudodifferential calculus is required, but these sections can be bypassed with no loss of continuity. The major part of the book should therefore be accessible to graduate students so that it can serve as an introduction to complex analysis in one and several variables. The last sections, however, are written mainly for readers familiar with microlocal analysis

Seminar on singularities of solutions of linear partial differential equations by Lars Hörmander( Book )

19 editions published between 1979 and 2016 in English and held by 629 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Singularities of solutions of differential equations forms the common theme of these papers taken from a seminar held at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in 1977-1978. While some of the lectures were devoted to the analysis of singularities, others focused on applications in spectral theory. As an introduction to the subject, this volume treats current research in the field in such a way that it can be studied with profit by the non-specialist
The analysis of linear partial differential operators by Lars Hörmander( )

56 editions published between 1983 and 2005 in English and German and held by 599 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Vol. I of Lars Hörmander's 4-volume treatisewas an exposition of the theory of distributions and Fourier analysis preparing for the study of linear partial differential operators. The present Vol. II is mainly devoted to operators with constant coefficients. An analysis of the existence and regularity of (fundamental) solutions in the first two chapters is followed by a thorough study of the Cauchy problem. One chapter is devoted to the spectral theory of short range perturbations of operatorswith constant coefficients, and another presents Fourier-Laplace representations of solutions of homogeneous differential equations with constant coefficients. The last chapter is a study of the closely related subject of convolution operators. The analysis of linear partial differential operators by Lars Hörmander( Book )

73 editions published between 1983 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1963 my book entitled "Linear partial differential operators" was published in the Grundlehren series. Some parts of it have aged well but others have been made obsolete for quite some time by techniques using pseudo-differential and Fourier integral operators. The rapid development has made it difficult to bring the book up to date. However, the new methods seem to have matured enough now to make an attempt worth while. The progress in the theory of linear partial differential equations during the past 30 years owes much to the theory of distributions created by Laurent Schwartz at the end of the 1940's. It summed up a great deal of the experience accumulated in the study of partial differential equations up to that time, and it has provided an ideal frame work for later developments. "Linear partial differential operators" began with a brief summary of distribution theory for this was still unfamiliar to many analysts 20 years ago. The presentation then proceeded directly to the most general results available on partial differential operators. Thus the reader was expected to have some prior familiarity with the classical theory although it was not appealed to explicitly. Today it may no longer be necessary to include basic distribution theory but it does not seem reasonable to assume a classical background in the theory of partial differential equations since modern treatments are rare

Partial differential equations and mathematical physics : the Danish-Swedish Analysis Seminar, 1995 by Lars Hörmander( Book )

16 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On March 17-19 and May 19-21,1995, analysis seminars were organized jointly at the universities of Copenhagen and Lund, under the heading "Danish-Swedish Analysis Seminar". The main topic was partial differen tial equations and related problems of mathematical physics. The lectures given are presented in this volume, some as short abstracts and some as quite complete expositions or survey papers. They span over a large vari ety of topics. The most frequently occurring theme is the use of microlocal analysis which is now important also in the study of non-linear differential equations although it originated entirely within the linear theory. Perhaps it is less surprising that microlocal analysis has proved to be useful in the study of mathematical problems of classical quantum mechanics, for it re ceived a substantial input of ideas from that field. The scientific committee for the invitation of speakers consisted of Gerd Grubb in Copenhagen, Lars Hormander and Anders MeHn in Lund, and Jo hannes Sjostrand in Paris. Lars Hormander and Anders Melin have edited the proceedings. They were hosts of the seminar days in Lund while Gerd Grubb was the host in Copenhagen. Financial support was obtained from the mathematics departments in Copenhagen and Lund, CNRS in France, the Danish and Swedish Na tional Research Councils, Gustaf Sigurd Magnuson's foundation at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and the Wenner-Gren foundation in Stockholm. We want to thank all these organisations for their support
Collected papers by Marcel Riesz( Book )

18 editions published between 1988 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 222 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marcel Riesz (1886-1969) was the younger of the famed pair of mathematicians and brothers. Although Hungarian he spent most of his professional life in Sweden. He worked on summability theory, analytic functions, the moment problem, harmonic and functional analysis, potential theory and the wave equation. The depth of his research and the clarity of his writing place his work on the same level as that of his brother Frédéric Riesz. This edition of his Collected Papers contains most of Marcel Riesz's published papers with the exception of a few papers in Hungarian that were subsumed into later books. It also includes a translation by J. Horváth of Riesz's thesis on summable trigonometric series and summable power series. They are thus a valuable reference work for libraries and for researchers

Lectures in modern analysis and applications by C. T Taam( Book )

5 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Lecture Series in Modern Analysis and Applications was sponsored by the Consortium of American, Catholic, Georgetown, George Washington and Howard Universities, of the District of Columbia, the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, in the greater Washington, D.C. area, during the period Fall, 1967 through Spring 1969. The series consisted of 8 sessions of 3 lectures each. Each session was devoted to an active basic area of contemporary analysis which is important in application or shows potential applications. Each lecture presented a survey and a critical review of certain aspects of that area, with emphasis on new results, open problems and applications. This volume, the third and final one of the series, contains five lectures from the seventh and eighth sessions, which were devoted to modern harmonic analysis and applications, and integration in function spaces and applications. The lectures concern the Littlewood-Paley Theory, the Theory of Automorphic Forms, Quantization and Unitary Representations, Random Linear Functionals, and the Absolute Continuity of Stochastic Processes. Miscellanea mathematica by Michael Francis Atiyah( )

1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mathematics has a certain mystique, for it is pure and ex- act, yet demands remarkable creativity. This reputation is reinforced by its characteristic abstraction and its own in- dividual language, which often disguise its origins in and connections with the physical world. Publishing mathematics, therefore, requires special effort and talent. Heinz Gotze, who has dedicated his life to scientific pu- blishing, took up this challenge with his typical enthusi- asm. This Festschrift celebrates his invaluable contribu- tions to the mathematical community, many of whose leading members he counts among his personal friends. The articles, written by mathematicians from around the world and coming from diverse fields, portray the important role of mathematics in our culture. Here, the reflections of important mathematicians, often focused on the history of mathematics, are collected, in recognition of Heinz Gotze's life-long support of mathematics
