Originally published in 1562, Arthur Brooke'sThe Tragical History of Romeus and Julietwas the primary source of inspiration for Shakespeare's famous dramatic tragedy,Romeo and Juliet. Brooke is thought to have translated the Italian story from a novella by Matteo Bandello published sometime in the early 16th century. While the plots of Brooke's translation and Shakespeare's play are very similar, Brooke's ending differs drastically from that in Shakespeare's play.
