"Whatever may be thought of the Principle of Utility, when considered as the foundation of morals, no one now-a-days will undertake to deny that it is the only safe rule of legislation. To establish and illustrate this proposition, and to show how it ought to be, and might be carried into practice, was the aim and end of Bentham's life and writings"--Preface. A fragment on government by Jeremy Bentham( Book )

110 editions published between 1823 and 2018 in 3 languages and held by 1,819 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume makes available one of the central texts in the development of utilitarian tradition, in the authoritative 1977 edition prepared by Professors Burns and Hart as part of Bentham's Collected Works. Certain that history was on his side, Bentham sought to rid the world of the hideous mess wrought by legal obfuscation and confusion, and to transform politics into a rational, scientific activity, premised on the fundamental axiom that "it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong
Legislator of the world : writings on codification, law, and education by Jeremy Bentham( )

17 editions published between 1998 and 2009 in English and German and held by 1,316 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bentham's central concern during the 1810s and 1820s was with the codification of the law. Rejecting both the common law and the historical approach to codification, he argued that a code of law should be based on a rigorous logical analysis of the categories of human action, and that each enactment should be followed by the reasons which justified it. Such an "all-comprehensive" code containing an interwoven rationale would signal a new era in legislation. Once one state had adopted such a code, other states would be obliged to follow its example, and Bentham would become in effect "legislator of the world"
Jeremy Bentham's economic writings by Jeremy Bentham( Book )

86 editions published between 1952 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

All three volumes contain historical introductions and collections of passages from Bentham's non-economic writings which illustrate his views on economics as a science and the problems of methodology. Volume 1 covers the period from 1787 to 1795. Volume 2 contains all the writings that are grouped around Bentham's bold idea and suggestion--the proposal of a "circulating annuity." Volume 3 collects all his relevant manuscripts written in and after 1801, showing a definite turning towards a theoretical and didactic treatment of economic life and thus reflect his growing conviction that it would be impossible for him to influence practice and policy

80 editions published between 1787 and 2012 in English and French and held by 1,042 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This 18th-century work by British philosopher and founder of utilitarianism Jeremy Bentham began as a series of 13 "letters" addressed to Scottish economist Adam Smith. Usury—the practice of charging interest on loans—was outlawed in Britain based on certain passages in the Christian Old Testament. Bentham argued that interest could, in fact, generate positive social benefits. His arguments were very influential and led to the gradual abolishment of restrictions on usury. G.K. Chesterton identified Bentham's essay on usury as the very beginning of the "modern world." There is little evidence as to Smith's reaction

First principles preparatory to constitutional code by Jeremy Bentham( Book )

13 editions published between 1989 and 2009 in English and held by 768 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The four essays by Jeremy Bentham assembled in this volume date from the spring and summer of 1822 and are based exclusively on manuscripts, many of which have never before been published. In the essays `Economy as Applied to Office', `Identification of Interests', `Supreme Operative', and `Constitutional Code Rationale', Bentham develops the general principles of constitutional law and government which underpin the detailed administrative provisions set out in Constitutional Code . In addition, original and penetrating discussions of such topics as sovereignty, constitutional rule, democratic and monarchical government, public finance, the aptitude and powers of officials, corruption, the influence of public opinion, and the delusive effect of religion and titles of honour, affirm Bentham's status as a political theorist of the first rank. As an important application of utilitarian principles to the structure and organization of government, and a major contribution to the theory of representative democracy, this volume will be of interest to students of philosophy, law, politics, economics, and history
