House of hunger : short stories by Dambudzo Marechera( Book )

38 editions published between 1978 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 772 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The novella and nine short stories, most of them set in Zimbabwe, symbolise both home and country as the 'house of hunger', the place of madness and violence and despair. Marechera describes a world in which tenderness has long given way to the tactics of survival, and he does so in a style at once explosive and loaded with angry humour
African rhapsody : short stories of the contemporary African experience by Nadežda Obradović( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 557 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Short stories by African writers on the theme of life's injustices. In one, a gardener is caught between revolutionaries and colonialists, in another a woman has to abandon her dying son to go to work as a domestic for whites. An unhappy recital from an unhappy continent
Black sunlight by Dambudzo Marechera( Book )

28 editions published between 1980 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In an unspecified setting the stream-of-consciousness narrative of this dark and visceral cult novel traces the fortunes of a group of anarchists in revolt against a military-fascist-capitalist opposition. In evocative flashes, sex, violence, war, myths and ideologies explode in a labyrinthine plot, viewed through the camera lens of a photojournalist known only as Christian. In Dambudzo Marechera's second experimental novel, he parodies African nationalist and racial identifications to show that notions of an 'essential African identity' were often invoked across Africa to authorise totalitarian regimes. Such irreverent, avant-garde literature was criticised upon publication in Zimbabwe in 1980, and Black Sunlight was banned on charges of 'Euromodernism' and challenging the concept of nation-building in the newly independent country."--Book cover
Cemetery of mind : collected poems of Dambudzo Marechera by Dambudzo Marechera( Book )

14 editions published between 1992 and 1999 in English and held by 292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dambudzo Marechera is usually remembered as a novelist. However, many people feel that Marechera's real talent was as a writer of poetry. Cemetery of Mind is the first comprehensive collection of his poems, compiled with notes by his biographer, Flora Veit-Wild. The volume contains more than 140 poems, many of which were retrieved after his death and were previously unpublished. It also includes an interview with Marechera on poetry."--BOOK JACKET
The black insider by Dambudzo Marechera( Book )

18 editions published between 1990 and 1999 in English and German and held by 271 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This was the first volume of Dambudzo Marechera's work to appear since his death in 1987. The title piece, the major work in this collection, was written in London in 1978. It has been edited here by Marechera's biographer, Flora Veit-Wild, together with three short stories and two poems from the same period. Veit-Wild's introduction provides a vivid picture of the young Zimbabwean's life in Britain as a student and writer. The Black Inside develops the preoccupations of his award-winning House of Hunger by exploring, in his devastatingly honest way, the predicaments of exile and the black identity, and examining the realities of living under the threat of the Bomb."--BOOK JACKET
Scrapiron blues by Dambudzo Marechera( Book )

19 editions published between 1994 and 1999 in English and Undetermined and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a collection of Marechera's last writings, evoking city life with its many disparate facets - from the glittering fashion shops in First Street Mall to the tramps in the alleys, and in Marechera's only known piece in Shona, "The Servants' Ball." What at first sight seems peaceful and harmless, is suddenly disrupted by flashes of madness for, in Marechera's universe, everyday life is always haunted by the nightmares of Zimbabwe's past." "In "The Concentration Camp," Marechera gives a poetic, deeply felt voice to the dread experienced by former inhabitants of the "keeps," the restricted villages of Zimbabwe's War of Liberation. Often he takes a child's view to measure the horrors of adult society. Gentleness paired with sarcasm marks his hardly known children's stories."--Jacket
