Ceremonies of the Pawnee by James R Murie( Book )

7 editions published between 1980 and 1981 in English and held by 688 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, written by Murie in collaboration with Clark Wissler is the combined result of the two projects, which extended over a decade. It is a detailed presentation of the essential features of Pawnee ceremonialism. The first part presents the annual cycle of Skiri ceremonial life, minutely describing most of the rituals as well as the role and functions of sacred bundles in the culture. The second part includes accounts of three surviving South Band ceremonies that Murie witnessed: the White Beaver Ceremony (or Doctor Dance) of the Chawi band, and the Bear and Buffalo dances of the Pitahawirata band. In each of the accounts the songs of the ceremony are given in both Pawnee and English. Together they constitute one of the most extensive song collections for any North American tribe. For the three South Band ceremonies, the vision stories underlying the songs are also presented. The manuscript, scheduled for publication on several occasions in the 1920s and 1930s, has been in the archives of the Bureau of American Ethnology since 1921. It is here presented in edited form, together with revised linguistic transcriptions and translations, notes, an expanded bibliography, a biography of Murie, and two indexes. Book jacket

The hako : song, pipe, and unity in a Pawnee Calumet ceremony by Alice C Fletcher( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 177 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Perhaps the most detailed description of a Calumet Ceremony was recorded near the turn of the century by ethnographer Alice C. Fletcher. Fletcher witnessed the Hako, a version of the Calumet Ceremony practiced by the Chaui clan of the Pawnee. With the invaluable assistance of Tahirussawichi, a Pawnee Ku'rahus or ceremonial leader, and renowned Indian scholar James R. Murie, himself a Pawnee, the author describes in marvelous detail the intricate rhythm and structure of the ceremony. Each song of the Hako is transcribed, translated, interpreted by the Pawnee Ku'rahus, and later analyzed by the author. Fletcher concludes that the Hako promised longevity, fertility, and prosperity to individuals and worked to insure "friendship and peace" between clans and tribes. The Hako, originally published in 1904, is introduced by Helen Myers, an associate professor of music at Trinity College and the ethnomusicology editor of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians

Pawnee NQ18( )

1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Pawnee are Native Americans who originally lived in what is now central Nebraska and central Kansas in the basins of the Platte and Republican rivers. The Pawnee spoke a Caddoan language. The focus is on the traditional way of life of the Pawnee. This file consists of 18 English language documents dealing primarily with traditional Pawnee ethnography for the period of 1850 to the 1920s. There is a slight focus in the file on materials dealing with the Skidi (Skiri) band of Pawnee. Probably the most comprehensive ethnographic information on the Pawnee as a whole is found in Weltfish, further supplemented with data from Smith, Grinnell, and the oral traditions described in Blaine. Major topics discussed in this file relate to culture history, ceremonialism, and religious beliefs. Other documents deal with more specific ethnographic topics such as music and songs; social organization; literature in the form of hero stories and folktales; and ethnoastronomy
