Renaissance thought : the classic, scholastic, and humanistic strains by Paul Oskar Kristeller( Book )

83 editions published between 1955 and 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Professor Kristeller's Renaissance Thought is one of the most valuable books in a valuable series, and readers of his later scattered studies will be glad to have them collected in Renaissance Thought II, a volume that enlarges his already wide domain. He is a prime authority on Renaissance humanism and philosophy and, while he is conversant with all the scholarship, his discriminating and illuminating surveys and inquiries are founded on an extraordinarily comprehensive and minute command of the original materials. - Back cover
The Renaissance philosophy of man : selections in translation by Ernst Cassirer( Book )

96 editions published between 1948 and 2007 in 4 languages and held by 2,251 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Despite our admiration for Renaissance achievement in the arts and sciences, in literature and classical learning, the rich and diversified philosophical thought of the period remains largely unknown. This volume illuminates three major currents of thought dominant in the earlier Italian Renaissance: classical humanism (Petrarch and Valla), Platonism (Ficino and Pico), and Aristotelianism (Pomponazzi). A short and elegant work of the Spaniard Vives is included to exhibit the diffusion of the ideas of humanism and Platonism outside Italy." [Back cover]

The three essays published together in this volume were written for entirely different occasions and purposes, but I hope they are all contributions to a common theme that is expressed in the title and that has attracted my interest for many years: the continued presence of medieval traits in the civilization of the Renaissance

This volume of essays has been prepared as a tribute to honor a great scholar, Paul Oskar Kristeller. Its genesis dates back to a meeting of several members of the Columbia university seminar on the Renaissance in the Spring of 1969. They resolved to undertake the preparation of a Festschrift with initial intention of presenting it to Professor Kristeller on the occasion of his retirement as a full-time faculty member in the Spring of 1973. -- From Preface (p. [xxi])

Greek philosophers of the Hellenistic age by Paul Oskar Kristeller( Book )

12 editions published between 1991 and 1993 in English and Italian and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Greek Philosophers of the Hellenistic Age examines an important but frequently neglected group of philosophers writing after Aristotle between the third and first centuries B.C. The work of a distinguished intellectual historian, this book is based on an erudite reading of a vast number of primary sources: the Greek and Latin writings of the philosophers, and the fragments, paraphrases, and testimonies from their lost works. Kristeller explores the thought of Epicurus; Zenon and Cleanthes, the founder of the Stoic school and his successor; Pyrrhon and Arcesilaus, the founder of Skepticism and the philosopher who introduced it into the Platonic Academy; and Chrysippus, the third head of the Stoic school and its most important representative. Other figures include Carneades and Philo of Larissa, the second and third representatives of Skepticism in the Platonic Academy, respectively; Panaetius, the first leader of Middle Stoicism; and Antiochus of Ascalon, the head of the Academy, who led it back from Skepticism and prepared Middle Platonism, which paved the way for Neoplatonism. Originally presented as a series of lectures before the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy, Greek Philosophers of the Hellenistic Age assesses a group of philosophers who exerted an enormous influence upon pagan and Christian writers of late antiquity - including Cicero and St. Augustine - and on many medieval and early modern philosophers, theologians, and other thinkers
