Cy Twombly: a retrospective by Kirk Varnedoe( Book )

27 editions published between 1994 and 1996 in 3 languages and held by 767 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this volume, an extended essay by Kirk Varnedoe, Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, examines the artist's background and early education in Lexington, Virginia, and charts his study at the Boston Museum School, the Art Students League of New York, and the renowned, progressive Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Twombly's early contacts with both the modern European tradition and New York School painting are examined, and the emergence of his own distinct style in the mid-1950s is presented with a new clarity." "More than fifty of the artist's most important paintings from all phases of his career are reproduced in color, including recent works never seen outside the studio and several important earlier works not previously published. A dozen sculptures, stretching from the artist's early assemblages of the 1940s through work of recent years, are also reproduced, as well as more than forty works on paper."--Jacket
Cy Twombly : a monograph by Richard Leeman( Book )

6 editions published in 2005 in English and Swedish and held by 554 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cy Twombly (b. 1928), one of America's greatest living artists, defies easy categorization. Subverting traditional distinctions between painting and drawing, brush and pencil work, written words and images, he has made a highly individual contribution to the history of twentieth-century art. In his canvases, turfs, swirls, twig bundles, ideograms and ornamental motifs confront one another in implied narrative; biomorphic entities resembling orifices, polyps, fringes or erupting effluvia conjure a protean sexuality; delicate cross-hatchings and tracery interacting with graffiti or detached letters and words evoke multiple associations." "This monograph interprets Twombly's huge and complex body of work through a close study of his oeuvre, following both a thematic and chronological progression from the late 1950s to his most recent work."--Jacket

Cy Twombly : the natural world, selected works, 2000-2007 by James Rondeau( Book )

11 editions published in 2009 in English and German and held by 349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cy Twombly's artworks merge drawing, painting, writing, and symbolic mark making in the pursuit a direct, intuitive form of expression. Primarily known for his still-incendiary paintings of the 1950s and 1960s, Twombly continues to create work in a potently transgressive vein. Much of his recent output derives from his abiding concern with the natural world, specifically landscape and seascape." "Cy Twombly: The Natural World, Selected Works, 2000-2007 features more than thirty works in a full range of media. Highlights include an untitled 2001 series of seven acrylics with wax, pencil, and collage on paper; five scupltures in wood and plaster (2000-04); seven dry print photographs examining in detail one of the sculptures (2002); and the three large multipanel paintings III Notes from Salah (2005-07). These impressive works testify to Twombly's ongoing creative vitality and reinforce his position as one of the greatest American artists of our time."--Jacket

Turner Monet Twombly : later paintings by Jeremy Lewison( Book )

8 editions published in 2011 in German and English and held by 302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This ambitious exhibition brings together works by J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Cy Twombly (1928-2011), three of the most prolific and well-known artists of all time. Turner Monet Twombly: Later Paintings explores the similarities between these artists in style, subject and artistic motivation during the last 20-30 years of their lives. Turner Monet Twombly: Later Paintings will feature iconic works such as Monet's fabulous Water Lilies and Turner's much loved Romantic landscapes. The exhibition will also include a major work from Twombly's vibrant and well-received series, Blooming: A Scattering of Blossoms and Other Things, shown in the UK for the first time. Alongside Turner's compelling, atmospheric works and the beautiful and emotive art of Monet, Twombly's original contemporary style adds a fresh and exciting dimension to the exhibition. For those already familiar with the artists' work, this exhibition is a revelation; for new audiences, it is a fascinating introduction. Not to be missed. Get the most out of your visit and pick up a Turner Monet Twombly audio guide for just £2.50. Cy Twombly : fifty years of works on paper by Simon Schama( Book )

10 editions published between 2004 and 2016 in English and held by 302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cy Twombly's work realizes its most personal expression in his intimately sized drawings and paintings on paper. Finding inspiration as much in the forces of nature as in ancient epics and legend, and using the simplest of media - pencils, ballpoint pens, crayons, wall paint - he creates poetic and archaic worlds, usually in series and often as collages." "The eighty-four works in this retrospective, organized by the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, in 2003 to mark Twombly's seventy-fifth birthday, were collected from the artist's studio, and many have not been previously exhibited. Dating from between 1953 and 2002, the drawings embrace the entire career of one of the most important American artists alive today, from his early monotypes to the major mythological cycles of later years, revealing the many nuances of his aesthetic approach."--Jacket
Reading Cy Twombly : poetry in paint by Mary Jacobus( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Many of Cy Twombly's paintings and drawings include handwritten words and phrases--naming or quoting poets ranging from Sappho, Homer, and Virgil to Mallarmé, Rilke, and Cavafy. Enigmatic and sometimes hard to decipher, these inscriptions are a distinctive feature of his work. Reading Cy Twombly poses both literary and art historical questions. How does poetic reference in largely abstract works affect their interpretation? Reading Cy Twombly is the first book to focus specifically on the artist's use of poetry. Twombly's library formed an extension of his studio and he sometimes painted with a book open in front of him. Drawing on original research in an archive that includes his paint-stained and annotated books, Mary Jacobus's account--richly illustrated with more than 125 color and black-and-white images--unlocks an important aspect of Twombly's practice. Jacobus shows that poetry was an indispensable source of reference throughout Twombly's career; as he said, he "never really separated painting and literature." Among much else, she explores the influence of Ezra Pound and Charles Olson; Twombly's fondness for Greek pastoral poetry and Virgil's Eclogues; the inspiration of the Iliad and Ovid's Metamorphoses; and Twombly's love of Keats and his collaboration with Octavio Paz. Twombly's art reveals both his distinctive relationship to poetry and his use of quotation to solve formal problems. A modern painter, he belongs in a critical tradition that goes back, by way of Roland Barthes, to Baudelaire. [This book] opens up fascinating new readings of some of the most important paintings and drawings of the twentieth century. -- Inside jacket flap

"Cy Twombly (b.1928) is one of the leading figures from the generation of American artists that also included Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol. Unlike them, he left America early in his career to live and work in Italy where he drew inspiration from European literature and classical culture. He swiftly built an international reputation with his uniquely expressive abstract paintings, works on paper and sculpture." "Accompanying a major, touring retrospective spanning over fifty years of Twombly's work, this book provides a long-needed critical overview of his career, focusing on his paintings, drawings and sculpture. There is also a rare and wide-ranging interview with the artist and a newly commissioned text by the artist Tacita Dean, as well as an illustrated chronology and extensive bibliography." "Combining the latest scholarship with numerous colour illustrations, this will be the most thorough examination of the life and work of this artist for years to come."--Jacket
