For more than twenty years, Croker was Secretary of the Admiralty and a powerful debater in the House of Commons. He was a favourite with George IV and a friend of the Duke of Wellington, Sir Robert Peel and many other notable characters of the time. He had his literary side, and for most of his life contributed regular articles to the "Quarterly Review" including a fierce attack on Keats' newly published "Endymion". These papers first published in 1884, gives an account of the principal political happenings, the behind the scene discussions and the gossip of the first half of the nineteenth century, viewed from the stand point of a leading figure in the Tory party. They are also notable for their record of many saying and opinions of the Duke of Wellington on the chief event of his own career
