Daniel Maximin fait toute la lumière sur la complicité qui a uni Césaire le poète martiniquais et Lam le peintre cubain pendant plus de quarante ans. Il nous invite à entrer de manière originale dans leurs univers intimes en faisant dialoguer non pas les hommes mais leur chef-d'oeuvre respectif : deux oeuvres initiales, initiatiques le Cahier d'un retour au pays natal et La Jungle créées entre la montée des périls fascistes et les pires combats de la guerre et qui les ont fait connaître à travers le monde. Tout commence le 25 mars 1941 quand le petit vapeur le Capitaine Paul-Lemerle appareille de Marseille en direction de l'ouest. À son bord, Wifredo Lam, André Breton et 350 autres intellectuels menacés par le régime de Vichy ou la police allemande. Un départ de forçats décrit dans Tristes Tropiques par un de leur compagnon, Claude Lévi-Strauss. L'accueil des autorités coloniales à la Martinique le 24 avril est glacial. Puis c'est la découverte inouïe de la revue Tropiques et de leurs fondateurs Suzanne et Aimé Césaire qui organisent des lectures pour leurs nouveaux amis. Celle du Cahier d'un retour au pays natal éblouit le peintre. C'est un chant qui manifeste la dignité du Noir, affirme son être et son génie propre, un combat contre l'injustice et le despotisme colonial... En retour, Césaire, observant le peintre s'immerger dans la nature tropicale, s'écrit : Il a vu ce paysage. Ça a été un choc profond. Sa peinture a changé. Et d'ajouter Lam est un poète , un homme des Antilles sur le point de replonger dans son identité afro-cubaine. Sur la toile naîtra La Jungle en 1942-1943. Dès cet instant le poète et le peintre ne se quitteront plus. Unis par un même enracinement dans la Caraïbe, un même cri d'indignation devant le drame colonial, un même combat pour la liberté totale et universelle... Ces frères en poésie dégaineront leurs couteaux de justice dans l'espoir de bâtir un monde nouveau. En 1982, ils ont baptisé leur dernière oeuvre commune, Annonciation, un dernier message d'espoir pour le xxie siècle, pour ne jamais abandonner l'idée d'une nouvelle humanité." P. [4] of cover
