Landscapes after the battle by Juan Goytisolo( Book )

The virtues of the solitary bird by Juan Goytisolo( Book )

48 editions published between 1987 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 845 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For Goytisolo, great writers are 'solitary birds' whose voice is an enchanting cry that pierces time. On his hospital bed, the persecuted narrator identifies with St John of the Cross, himself forced by the Inquisition to swallow his Treatise on the Qualities of the Solitary Bird. Through a scintillating succession of visions, soliloquies and ecstatic chants he converses with the banished saint. The agencies of repression have changed but, as in the past, a hideous
Exiled from almost everywhere : (the posthumous life of the monster of Le Sentier) : a novel by Juan Goytisolo( )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 754 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Exiled from Almost Everywhere, Juan Goytisolo's perverse mutant protagonist -- the Parisian "Monster of Le Sentier"--Is blown up by an extremist bomber and finds himself in the cyberspace of the Thereafter with an infinite collection of computer monitors. His curiosity piqued, he uses the screens at hand to explore the multiple ways war and terrorism are hyped in the Hereafter of his old life where he once happily cruised bathrooms and accosted children. Ricocheting from life to death and back again, meeting various colorful demagogues along the way -- the imam "Alice," a pedophile Monsignor, and a Rastafarian rabbi -- our "Monster" revisits seedy democracies that are a welter of shopping-cities and righteous violence voted in by an eternally duped citizenry and defended by the infamous erogenous bomb
Island of women by Juan Goytisolo( Book )

75 editions published between 1960 and 2002 in 9 languages and held by 725 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The female narrator of Goytisolo's novel, Claudia, returns to Malaga for an eleven day vacation to visit her husband, some old friends, and perhaps find out what it is that has plunged her into a state of worsening despair. She runs around the island with a bizarre group of debauchees and they all play the modern, absurd games: id est, homosexuality, lesbianism, playful sodomy, adultery, alcoholism. She recalls the days -- before the war -- when she and her husband Rafael were naive enough to believe that the world could be changed. Rafael had been a brilliant journalist and she an energetic idealist, doing good deeds in her Falange uniform. The moral erosion began because "the war had changed nothing". Both of them now are sexually impotent, he drinks to excess, she runs around with men and women. But they've agreed not to have to "account to each other". After the eleven day jaunt, Claudia realizes that nothing at all has changed, that her moral gangrene is progressing normally. In short, nothing very new
