Determination of complex reaction mechanisms : analysis of chemical, biological, and genetic networks by John Ross( Book )

23 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a chemical system with many chemical species several questions can be asked: what species react with other species: in what temporal order: and with what results? These questions have been asked for over one hundred years about simple and complex chemical systems, and the answers constitute the macroscopic reaction mechanism. In "Determination of Complex Reaction Mechanisms", authors John Ross, Igor Schreiber, and Marcel Vlad present several systematic approaches for obtaining information on the causal connectivity of chemical species, on correlations of chemical species, on the reaction pathway, and on the reaction mechanism. Basic pulse theory is demonstrated and tested in an experiment on glycolysis. In a second approach, measurements on time series of concentrations are used to construct correlation functions and a theory is developed which shows that from these functions information may be inferred on the reaction pathway, the reaction mechanism, and the centers of control in that mechanism.; A third approach is based on application of genetic algorithm methods to the study of the evolutionary development of a reaction mechanism, to the attainment given goals in a mechanism, and to the determination of a reaction mechanism and rate coefficients by comparison with experiment. Responses of non-linear systems to pulses or other perturbations are analyzed, and mechanisms of oscillatory reactions are presented in detail. The concluding chapters give an introduction to bioinformatics and statistical methods for determining reaction mechanisms

Thermodynamics and fluctuations far from equilibrium by John Ross( Book )

16 editions published in 2008 in English and Russian and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work deals with the formulation of the thermodynamics of chemical and other systems far from equilibrium, including connections to fluctuations. It contains applications to non-equilibrium stationary states and approaches to such states, systems with multiple stationary states, reaction diffusion systems, and more.--

Experimental and theoretical studies of chemical dynamics and instabilities in irreversible processes by John Ross( Book )

5 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The final report summarizes the work accomplished under the subcontract. The overall objectives of the investigation were as follows: The determination of molecular properties of chemical dynamics for reactions of importance to combustion and propulsion. Molecular beam techniques were used for the experimental part of this work and were accompanied by theoretical studies in chemical dynamics. The second purpose was the study of the interaction of chemical reactions with transport processes and flows in gases in which instabilities may occur. (Author)

Relaxation in a dilute binary gas mixture by John Ross( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The relaxation of a dilute hard sphere binary gas mixture is studied in the limit of vanishingly small concentration of one of the species. The velocity autocorrelation function and diffusion coefficient are evaluated by the integral approximation and Chapman-Enskog methods. Solutions are obtained as a function of the ratio of the masses of the two species and the limiting cases of the Rayleigh and Lorentz gases are considered in some detail. While the convergence of the Chapman-Enskog method becomes poor as the Lorentz limit is approached, the integral approximation yields solutions which are exact in this limit. In the Rayleigh limit, both methods yield the exact result. (Author)
