"Since its first publication, A Companion to Epistemology has established itself as the leading single-volume epistemology reference work in the field. This extended and revised edition brings the Companion up to date." "Part I, consisting of newly commissioned review essays, focuses on the major topics that have an abiding centrality for the field, including a priori justification, Bayesian epistemology, closure, contextualism, epistemic virtue, internalism vs. externalism, foundationalism vs. coherentism, perception, scepticsm, and social epistemology. Part II brings together twenty self-portraits of leading epistemologists who are widely recognized and respected for their contributions to the field. The content of the first edition is retained in Part III: Epistemology from A-Z. This section of nearly 300 entries has been extensively revised, with many new and rewritten entries reflecting recent developments in the field." Knowing full well by Ernest Sosa ( )
9 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 1,062 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In this book, Ernest Sosa explains the nature of knowledge through an approach originated by him years ago, known as virtue epistemology. Here he provides the first comprehensive account of his views on epistemic normativity as a form of performance normativity on two levels. On a first level is found the normativity of the apt performance, whose success manifests the performer's competence. On a higher level is found the normativity of the meta-apt performance, which manifests not necessarily first-order skill or competence but rather the reflective good judgment required for proper risk assessment. Sosa develops this bi-level account in multiple ways, by applying it to issues much disputed in recent epistemology: epistemic agency, how knowledge is normatively related to action, the knowledge norm of assertion, and the Meno problem as to how knowledge exceeds merely true belief. A full chapter is devoted to how experience should be understood if it is to figure in the epistemic competence that must be manifest in the truth of any belief apt enough to constitute knowledge. Another takes up the epistemology of testimony from the performance-theoretic perspective. Two other chapters are dedicated to comparisons with ostensibly rival views, such as classical internalist foundationalism, a knowledge-first view, and attributor contextualism. The book concludes with a defense of the epistemic circularity inherent in meta-aptness and thereby in the full aptness of knowing full well"--Provided by publisher

The epistemology of testimony by Jennifer Lackey ( Book )

"How do we acquire knowledge from either the spoken or written word of others? This is the question at the centre of The Epistemology of Testimony, a collection of essays devoted to the epistemological issues that arise from an examination of testimonial knowledge. Despite its historical neglect, this topic has occasioned an explosion of interesting and innovative philosophical work in recent years. The Epistemology of Testimony is intended to build on and further develop this work by bringing together new papers by some of the leading scholars in the field. Since this volume is the only collection of papers on testimony strictly within the analytic tradition, it represents a new and significant contribution to this fertile epistemological terrain."

Eleven pairs of newly commissioned essays face off on opposite sides of fundamental problems in current theories of knowledge. Can beliefs be justified through coherence alone? Is justified belief responsible belief? Lively debate format sharply defines the issues, and paves the way for further discussion. Will serve as an accessible introduction to the major topics in contemporary epistemology, whilst also capturing the imag

"Virtue Epistemology presents a new approach to some of the oldest and most gripping problems of philosophy, those of knowledge and skepticism. Ernest Sosa argues for two levels of knowledge, the animal and the reflective, each viewed as a distinctive human accomplishment. By adopting a kind of virtue epistemology in line with the tradition found in Aristotle, Aquinas, Reid, and especially Descartes, he presents an account of knowledge which can be used to shed light on different varieties of skepticism, the nature and status of intuitions, and epistemic normativity"--Jacket
