Managing by Henry Mintzberg( )

Henry Mintzberg first became a star with his 1973 classic book, The Nature of Managerial Work, which overturned many standard views of what managers do and how they do it. Since then, Mintzberg has written many other important and bestselling books, such as The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning and Managers Not MBAs. In this new book Mintzberg provides the most comprehensive, most authoritative, and most revealing examination of managing yet written. He updates his pathbreaking and influential findings in The Nature of Managerial Work, comprehensively analyzes research on managing over th
The rise and fall of strategic planning : reconceiving roles for planning, plans, planners by Henry Mintzberg( Book )
68 editions published between 1993 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 2,379 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this definitive and revealing history, Henry Mintzberg, the iconoclastic former president of the Strategic Management Society, unmasks the press that has mesmerized so many organizations since 1965: strategic planning. One of our most brilliant and original management thinkers, Mintzberg concludes that the term is an oxymoron -- that strategy cannot be planned because planning is about analysis and strategy is about synthesis. That is why, he asserts, the process has failed so often and so dramatically. Mintzberg traces the origins and history of strategic planning through its prominence and subsequent fall. He argues that we must reconceive the process by which strategies are created -- by emphasizing informal learning and personal vision -- and the roles that can be played by planners. Mintzberg proposes new and unusual definitions of planning and strategy, and examines in novel and insightful ways the various models of strategic planning and the evidence of why they failed. Reviewing the so-called "pitfalls" of planning, he shows how the process itself can destroy commitment, narrow a company's vision, discourage change, and breed an atmosphere of politics. In a harsh critique of many sacred cows, he describes three basic fallacies of the process -- that discontinuities can be predicted, that strategists can be detached from the operations of the organization, and that the process of strategy-making itself can be formalized. Mintzberg devotes a substantial section to the new role for planning, plans, and planners, not inside the strategy-making process, but in support of it, providing some of its inputs and sometimes programming its outputs as well as encouraging strategic thinking in general. This book is required reading for anyone in an organization who is influenced by the planning or the strategy-making processes

Managers, not MBAs : a hard look at the soft practice of managing and management development by Henry Mintzberg( Book )
51 editions published between 2003 and 2008 in 7 languages and held by 1,992 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Mintzberg asserts that conventional MBA classrooms overemphasize the science of management while ignoring its art and denigrating its craft, leaving a distorted impression of its practice. We need to get back to a more engaging style of management, to build stronger organizations, not bloated share prices. This calls for another approach to management education, whereby practicing managers learn from their own experience. We need to build the art and the craft back into management education, and into management itself." "Mintzberg examines what is wrong with our current system. Conventional MBA programs are mostly for young people with little or no experience. These are the wrong people. Programs to train them emphasize analysis and technique. These are the wrong ways. They leave graduates with the false impression that they have been trained as managers, which has had a corrupting effect on the practice of management as well as on our organizations and societies. These are the wrong consequences." "Mintzberg describes a very different approach to management education, which encourages practicing managers to learn from their own experience. No one can create a manager in a classroom. But existing managers can significantly improve their practice in a thoughtful classroom that makes use of that experience."--BOOK JACKET. Crump

Strategy safari : a guided tour through the wilds of strategic management by Henry Mintzberg( Book )
28 editions published between 1998 and 2010 in 4 languages and held by 1,252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Strategy making is considered the high point of managerial activity. But bombarded by fads and fixes, most managers have been groping blindly to get their arms around the proverbial elephant. Now Henry Mintzberg has teamed up with Bruce Ahlstrand and Joseph Lampel to create a powerful antidote: a comprehensive and illuminating - as well as colorful - tour through the fields of strategic management. Mintzberg, Ahlstrand, and Lampel have shaped each of ten different approaches into a coherent school of strategy formation. In the process, the authors clarify the enormous amount of confusion that exists." "The authors provide a thorough critique of the contributions and limitations of each school - from the design, planning, positioning, entrepreneurial, and cognitive schools to the learning, power, cultural, environmental, and configurational schools - culminating in how they might combine to reveal that elephant."--Jacket
Structure in fives : designing effective organizations by Henry Mintzberg( Book )
38 editions published between 1983 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 942 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Every organized human activity, from the making of pots to the placing of a man on the moon, gives rise to two fundamental and opposing requirements: the division of labor into various tasks to be performed, and the coordination of these tasks to accomplish the activity. The structure of an organization can be defined simply as the sum total of the ways in which its labor is divided into distinct tasks and then its coordination is achieved among these tasks. The elements of structure should be selected to achieve an internal consistency or harmony, as well as basic consistency with the organization's situation. This leads us to the conclusion that both the design parameters and the situational factors should be clustered to create what we call configurations. The central theme of this book is that a limited number of these configurations explain most of the tendencies that drive effective organizations to structure themselves as they do. In other words, the design of an effective organizationel structure - in fact, even the diagnosis of problems in many ineffective ones - seems to involve the consideration of only a few basic configurations

Simply managing : what managers do and can do better by Henry Mintzberg( )
11 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and Chinese and held by 525 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The author appreciates that managers are busy people. So he has taken his classic book Managing, done some updating, and distilled its essence into this shortened text. The essence of the book remains the same: what the author has learned from observing twenty-nine managers in settings ranging from a refugee camp to a symphony orchestra. The book considers the intense dynamics of this job as well as its inescapable conundrums, for example: How is anyone supposed to think, let alone think ahead, in this frenetic job? Are leaders really more important than managers? Where has all the judgment gone? Is email destroying management practice? How can managers connect when their job disconnects them from what they are managing? The author has written this book for practicing managers, about their practice of management, and for new managers befuddled by the strange new world of managing. --From back cover
