"In a single decade, between his twenty-seventh and thirty-seventh years, Dutch-born Vincent van Gogh created one of the most important legacies of painting ever to enrich the world. His striking use of color--much of it pure color, and thick-layered--exalted and even immortalized what he chose to depict: cypresses, orchards, wheat fields, and swirling clouds all ablaze under the scalding sun of Provence; a cafe in Arles crowned by a star-dappled evening sky; sunflowers and oleanders almost palable in their brilliance; and the hardworking peasants of the low countries and France, for whom he had a deep, almost religious feeling. Van Gogh's paintings, we are reminded by Meyer Schapiro, University Professor Emeritus, Columbia University, 'are the first brightly colored paintings of the nineteenth century.' In his introduction, this world-renowned art historian sees absolute color as Van Gogh's 'carrier of his own passionateness and vitality.' Schapiro traces the painter's developing technique, as well as his travels in France and Belgium, his stormy relations with painter Paul Gauguin, and his periods of confinement in a hospital and an asylum--where he continued to paint. He analyzes with great sympathy and astuteness the reflection in Van Gogh's work of the artist's high aspirations and the defeats that life dealt him. Quotations from Van Gogh's letters to his beloved brother Theo, reflections on his own approaching death, and his portraits of friends as well as himself further our understanding of this tormented genius. Forty-nine dazzling colorplates, each with a commentary that is informative about both the painter and his art, are supplemented by twenty black-and-white reproductions. Together, illustrations and text give a profoundly stirring account of a master who came out of Holland and transfigured the art of painting forever."--Jacket

"In the final essay, Schapiro shows that, although the greatest political work of art of the twentieth century, Guemica nevertheless embodies many of Picasso's artistic obsessions. Painted in the course of one month (May 1937) to memorialize the bombing of a rural town during the Spanish Civil War, Guemica reflects Picasso's fantasies of himself and his family; it contains analogues of his own rage, anxiety, and feelings about death, as well as his awareness of the place of the work in the history of art."--Jacket

This volume contains two of Professor Meyer Schapiro's most important works on the complex and provocative relationships between writing and images. In "Words and Pictures: On the Literal and the Symbolic in the Illustration of a Text," Professor Schapiro examines the relationship between images and the texts that it is their function to illustrate. This relationship is far from simple, and lends itself to all sorts of variations, transformations, displacements, overflowings, and even contradictions that are ultimately symbols of "changing ideas and ways of thought."

Mondrian : on the humanity of abstract painting by Meyer Schapiro( Book )

14 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 390 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In "On the Humanity of Abstract Painting," Schapiro systematically dismantles the criticism of abstraction as cold, detached, and inartistic. Instead, he proves that this art form is capable of great expressive and intellectual power, endowed with lyricism and grace. He proposes new ways of viewing and thinking about abstraction, in the end establishes it as "an obvious and necessary enrichment of our lives." With "Mondrian: Order and Randomness in Abstract Painting," Schapiro analyses many of the painter's most important works, from The Red Mill to Broadway Boogie-Woogie. He articulates the subtleties of Mondrian's formal strategies and his innate lyricism. He proceeds to map Mondrian's relation to his predecessors, and shows that this archetypal abstractionist was in fact indebted to the formal compositional strategies of such leading late nineteenth century artists as Degas, Monet, Seurat, and Toulouse-Lautrec
