Mathew Brady and the image of history by Mary Panzer( Book )

4 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 810 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Taking advantage of emerging photographic paper printing techniques to create large-format, classically posed portraits, Brady also collaborated with painters such as G.P.A. Healy and Alonzo Chappel, who used his photographs to complete their own heroically scaled images. Contending that Brady's photographs contribute to an ongoing national interest in the Civil War, Panzer concludes that they continue to function as Brady hoped they would, constructing an idealized history in which fact and memory are intertwined
For all the world to see : visual culture and the struggle for civil rights by Maurice Berger( Book )

7 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 808 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1955, shortly after Emmett Till was murdered by white supremacists in Mississippi, his grieving mother distributed to the press a gruesome photograph of his mutilated corpse. Asked why she would do this, she explained that by witnessing with their own eyes the brutality of segregation and racism, Americans would be more likely to support the cause of racial justice. "Let the world see what I've seen," was her reply. The publication of the photograph inspired a generation of activists to join the civil rights movement. Despite this extraordinary episode, the story of visual culture's role in the modern civil rights movement is rarely included in its history. This is the first comprehensive examination of the ways images mattered in the struggle, and it investigates a broad range of media including photography, television, film, magazines, newspapers, and advertising. These images were ever present and diverse: the startling footage of southern white aggression and black suffering that appeared night after night on television news programs; the photographs of black achievers and martyrs in Negro periodicals; the humble snapshot, no less powerful in its ability to edify and motivate. In each case, the war against racism was waged through pictures, millions of points of light, millions of potent weapons that forever changed a nation. This book allows us to see and understand the crucial role that visual culture played in forever changing a nation

The exhibition New Photography from China and its catalogue offer the first comprehensive look at the body of photographic art produced during this period. Often ambitious in scale and experimental in nature, the works featured in 'New Photography From China' encompass a wide range of highly individual responses to these unprecedented transformations. Essays by co-curators and distinguished scholars Christopher Phillips and Wu Hung examine the recent history and current status of photography in China. Also included are artist interviews conducted by Melissa Chiu, Lisa Corrin, and Stephanie Smith artists' biographies and a bibliography. Many of these artists will be introduced to the American public for the first time. This catalogue is a valuable resource for art and cultural historians, students, or anyone interested in contemporary Asian art." -- Publisher description
Behind closed doors : the art of Hans Bellmer by Therese Lichtenstein( Book )

6 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The life-size, adolescent-girl dolls created by the German artist Hans Bellmer in the 1930s are the subject of Therese Lichtenstein's highly original work. Disturbing and controversial, Bellmer's dolls - with their uncanny, fragmented bodies and eroticized poses - were just as shocking during Bellmer's time as they are today. Until now there has been little available in English about Bellmer's dolls, and Lichtenstein's book will be welcomed for its fresh interpretations of the artist's work and his place in European modernism. Eighty striking photographs accompany the text."--Jacket
