Mahlers 8. Sinfonie ist ein wahrhaft episches Werk, das einen enormen Chor, ein riesiges Orchester, nicht weniger als 8 Solisten und zusätzliche Blechbläser hinter dem Podium verlangt. Nicht von ungefähr, aber ohne Mahlers Zustimmung, wurde sie daher als "Sinfonie der Tausend" bezeichnet. Die Uraufführung 1910 in München war ein triumphaler Erfolg, gleichzeitig war es das letzte Dirigat Mahlers in Europa, 8 Monate später starb er. Die 8. Sinfonie ist in 2 deutlich voneinander abgesetzte Sätze geteilt und spannt den Bogen vom Pfingsthymnus Veni creator spiritus bis zur Schlussszene aus dem 2. Teil von Goethes Faust. - Die Londoner St. Paul's Cathedral bildete im letzten Jahr den spektakulären Rahmen für eine eindrucksvolle Aufführung der Sinfonie der Tausend mit Valery Gergiev und dem London Symphony Orchestra. Sie wird auf dieser preiswerten CD in SACD-Qualität nacherlebbar. Breite Empfehlung
