A mathematical introduction to fluid mechanics by
Alexandre Joel Chorin(
Book
)
52 editions published between 1979 and 2013 in English and held by 1,262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences, provoking a blurring of boundaries between scientific disciplines and a resurgence of interest in the modern as well as the classical techniques of applied mathematics. This renewal of interest, both in research and teaching, has led to the establishment of the series: Texts in Applied Mathematics (TAM). The development of new courses is a natural consequence of a high Ievel of excitement on the research frontier as newer techniques, such as numerical and symbolic computer systems, dynamical systems, and chaos, mix with and reinforce the traditional methods of applied mathematics. Thus, the purpose of this textbook series is to meet the current and future needs of these advances and encourage the teaching of new courses. TAM will publish textbooks suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, and will complement the Applied Mathematical Sciences (AMS) series, which will focus on advanced textbooks and research Ievel monographs. Preface This book is based on a oneterm course in fluid mechanics originally taught in the Department of Mathematics of the University of California, Berkeley, during the spring of 1978. The goal of the course was not to provide an exhaustive account of fluid mechanics, nor to assess the engineering value of various approximation procedures

Book
)
38 editions published between 1983 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 906 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The purpose of this book is to provide core material in nonlinear analysis for mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and mathematical biologists. The main goal is to provide a working knowledge of manifolds, dynamical systems, tensors, and differential forms. Some applications to Hamiltonian mechanics, fluid mechanics, electromagnetism, plasma dynamics and control theory are given using both invariant and index notation. Introduction to mechanics and symmetry : a basic exposition of classical mechanical systems by
Jerrold E Marsden(
Book
)
44 editions published between 1994 and 2010 in English and German and held by 821 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Symmetry has always played an important role in mechanics, from fundamental formulations of basic principles to concrete applications. The theme of the book is to develop the basic theory and applications of mechanics with an emphasis on the role of symmetry. In recent times, the interest in mechanics, and in symmetry techniques in particular, has accelerated because of developments in dynamical systems, the use of geometric methods and new applications to integrable and chaotic systems, control systems, stability, and bifurcation, and the study of specific rigid, fluid, plasma, and elastic systems. Introduction to Mechanics and Symmetry lays the basic foundation for these topics and includes numerous applications, making it beneficial to physicists and engineers. This text has specific examples and applications showing how the theory works, and uptodate techniques, all of which make it accessible to a wide variety of readers, especially senior undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering."Jacket

Hamiltonian reduction by stages by
Jerrold E Marsden(
Book
)
17 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 233 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this volume readers will find for the first time a detailed account of the theory of symplectic reduction by stages, along with numerous illustrations of the theory. Special emphasis is given to group extensions, including a detailed discussion of the Euclidean group, the oscillator group, the BottVirasoro group and other groups of matrices. Ample background theory on symplectic reduction and cotangent bundle reduction in particular is provided. Novel features of the book are the inclusion of a systematic treatment of the cotangent bundle case, including the identification of cocycles with magnetic terms, as well as the general theory of singular reduction by stages

Geometry, mechanics, and dynamics : volume in honor of the 60th birthday of J.E. Marsden(
Book
)
11 editions published between 2002 and 2005 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume aims to acknowledge J.E. Marsden's influence as a teacher, propagator of new ideas, and mentor of young talent. It presents both survey articles and research articles in the fields that represent the main themes of his work, including elesticity and analysis, fluid mechanics, dynamical systems theory, geometric mechanics, geometric control theory, and relativity and quantum mechanics. The common thread throughout is the use of geometric methods that serve to unify diverse disciplines and bring a wide variety of scientists and mathematicians together in a way that enhances dialogue and encourages cooperation. This book may serve as a guide to rapidly evolving areas as well as a resource both for students who want to work in one of these fields and practitioners who seek a broader view
