Air pollution, global change and forests in the new millennium by David Karnosky ( Book )
4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The chapters in this book present a snapshot of the state of knowledge of air pollution effects at the beginning of the 21st century. From their different disciplines, a distinguished collection of authors document their understanding of how leaves, trees, and forests respond to air pollutants and climate change. Scenarios of global change and air pollution are described. The authors describe responses of forests to climate variability, tropospheric ozone, rising atmospheric CO₂, the combination of CO₂ and ozone, and deposition of acidic compounds and heavy metals. The responses to ozone receive particular attention because of increasing concern about its damaging effects and increasing concentrations in rural areas. Scaling issues are addressed - from leaves to trees, from juvenile trees to mature trees, from short-term responses to long-term responses, and from small-scale experiments and observations to large-scale forest ecosystems. This book is one major product of a conference sponsored by the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations, the USDA Forest Service Global Change Northern Stations Program, the Arthur Ross Foundation, NCASI, the Canadian Forest Service, and Michigan Technological University. The conference, held in May 2000 in Houghton, Michigan, USA, was appropriately titled "Air Pollution, Global Change, and Forests in the New Millennium". The Editors, David Karnosky, Kevin Percy, Art Chappelka, Caroline Simpson, and Janet Pikkarainen organized the conference and edited this book.--[Source inconnue]

Forest history international studies on socio-economic and forest ecosystem change : report no. 2 of the IUFRO Task Force on Environmental Change ( )
5 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 225 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book presents edited and revised versions of 31 papers selected from those presented at a major conference on 'History and forest resources', held in Florence, Italy, in 1998. It also includes an introduction by the first editor. The book is a companion volume to 'Methods and approaches in forest history' (IUFRO Research Series No. 3), which is also based on papers from the conference, and published by CABI Publishing in association with IUFRO. The conference was organized by the Italian Academy of Forestry Science and IUFRO Working Group S6.07.02 on Forest History. As a whole the papers present details of the interrelationships between forest ecosystems and socioeconomic development (including early forest industry development) from 13 countries. The main economic and social factors, techniques and local practices, as well as legal, political, environmental and ecological aspects related to forest changes are discussed, according to the latest achievements in forest history research
Forests and landscapes : linking ecology, sustainability, and aesthetics by Stephen Sheppard ( Book )
3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The visual landscape of forests is an important source of information for the public in judging the sustainability of forest resource management, and there is an increasing recognition of the importance of the linkage between forest ecology and aesthetics among foresters and environmental scientists. Forest resource managers pursuing the goals of ecosystem management must consider the aesthetic consequences of timber harvesting operations and find ways to explain the ecological benefits of their activities. This book addresses the relationship between people's perceptions and sustainability. It arose from a workshop organized and funded by the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and the Faculty of Forestry of the University of British Columbia. After a foreword (by Gobster, P. H.), it has 17 chapters by various authors arranged in 6 parts: I. Linking ecological sustainability to aesthetics: do people prefer sustainable landscapes? (one introductory chapter by the editors); II. Seeing and knowing: approaches to aesthetics and sustainability (4 chapters); III. Perspectives on forest sustainability (3 chapters); IV. Theories relating aesthetics and forest ecology (4 chapters); V. Visualization of forest landscapes (4 chapters); and VI. Reconciling forest sustainability and aesthetics (one concluding chapter discussing priorities). Twelve (unpaginated) pages of colour plates, and a subject index are included. All the chapters are noticed separately on the CAB ABSTRACTS database

Methods and approaches in forest history ( Book )
6 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book presents edited and revised versions of 23 papers selected from those presented at a major conference on History and forest resources, held in Florence, Italy, in 1998. It also includes an introduction by the first editor. The book is a companion volume to 'Forest history: international studies on socio-economic and forest ecosystem change' (IUFRO Research Series No. 2), which is also based on papers from the conference, and published by CABI Publishing in association with IUFRO. The conference was organized by the Italian Academy of Forestry Science and IUFRO Working Group S6.07.02 on Forest History. The focus of this set of papers is the different approaches and methods adopted in the study of forest history. In particular, the interdisciplinary nature of these studies is emphasized, bringing in the different perspectives of anthropologists, botanists, ecologists, foresters, historians, geneticists and geographers. As a whole, the volume demonstrates the rich diversity of approaches and methods in forest history and the need to integrate them to give a more meaningful understanding of human-nature interactions, making forest history a more effective tool for the management of forest ecosystems.
