Air pollution, global change and forests in the new millennium by David Karnosky( Book )

6 editions published between 2003 and 2006 in English and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The chapters in this book present a snapshot of the state of knowledge of air pollution effects at the beginning of the 21st century. From their different disciplines, a distinguished collection of authors document their understanding of how leaves, trees, and forests respond to air pollutants and climate change. Scenarios of global change and air pollution are described. The authors describe responses of forests to climate variability, tropospheric ozone, rising atmospheric CO<INF>2</INF>, the combination of CO<INF>2</INF> and ozone, and deposition of acidic compounds and heavy metals. The responses to ozone receive particular attention because of increasing concern about its damaging effects and increasing concentrations in rural areas. Scaling issues are addressed - from leaves to trees, from juvenile trees to mature trees, from short-term responses to long-term responses, and from small-scale experiments and observations to large-scale forest ecosystems. This book is one major product of a conference sponsored by the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations, the USDA Forest Service Global Change Northern Stations Program, the Arthur Ross Foundation, NCASI, the Canadian Forest Service, and Michigan Technological University. The conference, held in May 2000 in Houghton, Michigan, USA, was appropriately titled "Air Pollution, Global Change, and Forests in the New Millennium". The Editors, David Karnosky, Kevin Percy, Art Chappelka, Caroline Simpson, and Janet Pikkarainen organized the conference and edited this book

Forests and landscapes : linking ecology, sustainability, and aesthetics by S. R. J Sheppard( Book )

3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Forests are an important component in the visual appeal of landscapes. There is an increasing recognition of the importance of this subject among foresters and environmental scientists. Increasingly, forest resource managers must consider both the aesthetic consequences of timber harvesting operations and management plans and public perceptions of the sustainability of forest eco-system management. Written by world class authorities this book is the first to address this subject area. It consists of 17 chapters and is divided into six parts. The interdisciplinary nature of the book brings together not only foresters and ecologists, but also landscape architects, psychologists and philosophers.--Publisher's website

Methods and approaches in forest history( Book )

5 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents edited and revised versions of 23 papers selected from those presented at a major conference on History and forest resources, held in Florence, Italy, in 1998. It also includes an introduction by the first editor. The book is a companion volume to 'Forest history: international studies on socio-economic and forest ecosystem change' (IUFRO Research Series No. 2), which is also based on papers from the conference, and published by CABI Publishing in association with IUFRO. The conference was organized by the Italian Academy of Forestry Science and IUFRO Working Group S6.07.02 on Forest History. The focus of this set of papers is the different approaches and methods adopted in the study of forest history. In particular, the interdisciplinary nature of these studies is emphasized, bringing in the different perspectives of anthropologists, botanists, ecologists, foresters, historians, geneticists and geographers. As a whole, the volume demonstrates the rich diversity of approaches and methods in forest history and the need to integrate them to give a more meaningful understanding of human-nature interactions, making forest history a more effective tool for the management of forest ecosystems. All the papers are noticed separately on the CAB ABSTRACTS database
