Paul Klee was endowed with a rich and many-sided personality that was continually spilling over into forms of expression other than his painting and that made him one of the most extraordinary phenomena of modern European art. These abilities have left their record in the four intimate Diaries in which he faithfully recorded the events of his inner and outer life from his nineteenth to his fortieth year. Here, together with recollections of his childhood in Bern, his relations with his family and such friends as Kandinsky, Marc, Macke, and many others, his observations on nature and people, his trips to Italy and Tunisia, and his military service, the reader will find Klee's crucial experience with literature and music, as well as many of his essential ideas about his own artistic technique and the creative process

Paul Klee, 1879-1940 by Susanna Partsch( Book )

29 editions published between 1990 and 2015 in 6 languages and held by 709 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With careful theories and many thousands of paintings, drawings, and watercolors, Paul Klee (1879-1940)is considered one of the most cerebral and prolific leaders of 20th century European art. Though typically small in scale, his works are remarkable for their sophisticated thought and meticulous nuances of line, colour, and tonality. Klee s stylistic formation was shaped by early affiliation with the German expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter and, in particular, by a 1914 trip to Tunisia which transformed his use of color. After the war, he taught at the esteemed Bauhaus school, where his lectures, like his emerging practice, emphasized the symbolic potential of shades, lines, and geometries. Klee was also inspired by Cubism, poetry, music, literature, language, and the simplistic power of children's art

12 editions published between 1999 and 2008 in 5 languages and held by 523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jean-Louis Ferrier's highly original interpretation offers us a new point of entrance into Paul Klee's playful, mysterious world. Of the artist's corpus of 8,926 works, 140 are illustrated here. Born into a family of musicians, Klee long hesitated between painting and the violin, and music remained a major source of inspiration. His quest to geometrize the subject and his work on materials, line and colour proved seminal. He began teaching at the Bauhaus in 1920, making a major contribution to the development of the visual arts. To this distinguished teaching career we owe his celebrated theoretical works, notably the Pedagogical Sketch Book."--Jacket

"Paul Klee's Pictorial Writing examines the artist's appropriation of verbal signs, literary texts, and written scripts in his pictorial works. K. Porter Aichele's study is the first to examine how linguistic symbols function in Klee's work and what they mean. Reconstructing the artist's rich cultural milieu from his diaries, letters, lecture notes, and visual allusions, Aichele shows how these sources provide the framework for fresh interpretations of works ranging from letter forms in pictorial settings to invented visual texts
