Statistical independence in probability, analysis and number theory by
Mark Kac(
Book
)
58 editions published between 1959 and 2018 in 7 languages and held by 1,107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Professor Kac's monograph is designed to illustrate how simple observations can be made the starting point of rich and fruitful theories and how the same theme recurs in seemingly unrelated disciplines. An elementary but thorough discussion of the game of 'heads or tails', including the normal law and the laws of large numbers, is presented in a setting in which a variety of purely analytic results appear natural and inevitable. The chapter 'Primes Play a Game of Chance' uses the same setting in dealing with problems of the distribution of values of arithmetic functions. The final chapter 'From Kinetic Theory to Continued Fractions' deals with a spectacular application of the ergodic theorems to continued fractions. Mark Kac conveyed his infectious enthusiasm for mathematics and its applications in his lectures, papers, and books. Two of his papers won Chauvenet awards for expository excellence. Born in Poland, he studied with Hugo Steinhaus at Lwów earning his doctorate in 1936. He had a long and productive career in the United States, serving on the faculties of Cornell University (19391961), Rockefeller University (19611982), and the University of Southern California (1982 until his death in 1984)

Discrete thoughts : essays on mathematics, science, and philosophy by
Mark Kac(
Book
)
58 editions published between 1986 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 880 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This is a volume of essays and reviews that delightfully explore mathematics in all its moods from the light and the witty, and humorous to serious, rational, and cerebral. Topics include: logic, combinatorics, statistics, economics, artificial intelligence, computer science, and applications of mathematics broadly. You will also find history and philosophy covered, including discussion of the work of Ulam, Kant, Heidegger among others." ... these papers reflect on mathematics and its influence on human society. They can help the specialist to notice what is going on around him, and they may lead educated people from other domains to a better understanding of mathematics. Many of these papers can advise educators how to form a modern mathematics education, which develops approved ideas and institutions ... I admire the stimulating perspectives of the authors."American Mathematical Society "'Mathematicians, like Proust and everyone else, are at their best when writing about their first love' ... They are among the very best we have; and their best is very good indeed. ... One approaches this book with high hopes. Happily, one is not disappointed."The Mathematical Intelligencer "Mathematics is shaped by the consistent concerns and styles of powerful minds three of which are represented here. Kac's work is marked by deep commitment and breadth of inquiry. Rota is the easiest of these authors to read ... a delight: witty and urbane, with a clear and interesting agenda and an astonishing intellectual range. To read him is to be a part of a pleasant and rewarding conversation.Mathematics Magazine

Integral geometry and geometric probability by
Luis A Santaló(
Book
)
10 editions published between 1976 and 2004 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Now available in the Cambridge Mathematical Library, the classic work from Luis Santaló. Integral geometry originated with problems on geometrical probability and convex bodies. Its later developments, however, have proved to be useful in several fields ranging from pure mathematics (measure theory, continuous groups) to technical and applied disciplines (pattern recognition, stereology). The book is a systematic exposition of the theory and a compilation of the main results in the field. The volume can be used to complement courses on differential geometry, Lie groups or probability or differential geometry. It is ideal both as a reference and for those wishing to enter the field
