Greek literary education and Roman political reality are evident in the poetry of Statius (c. 50-96 CE). His Silvae are thirty-two occasional poems. His masterpiece, the epic Thebaid, recounts the struggle for kingship between the two sons of Oedipus. The extant portion of his Achilleid begins an account of Achilles' life and renews epic
Statius by P. Papinius Statius( Book )
101 editions published between 1731 and 2003 in 5 languages and held by 1,418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Statius' Silvae, thirty-two occasional poems, were written probably between 89 and 96 AD. Here the poet congratulates friends, consoles mourners, sends thanks, admires a memorable scene. The verse is light in touch, with a distinct picture quality. Statius gives us in these impromptu poems clear images of Domitian's Rome. Statius published his Thebaid in the last decade of the first century. This epic recounting the struggle between the two sons of Oedipus for the kingship of Thebes is his masterpiece, a stirring exploration of the passions of civil war. The extant portion of his unfinished Achilleid is strikingly different in tone; this second epic begins as a charming account of Achilles' life. -- Jacket

147 editions published between 1477 and 2010 in 9 languages and held by 879 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Statius completed one epic, the 12-book Thebaid, an ambitious work, that describes the struggle of the brothers Polyneices and Eteocles for the throne of the ancient Greek city of Thebes. It has many features borrowed from Virgil. The work begins and ends with passages that convey an atmosphere of dramatic tension and considerable tragic power
Thebaid a song of Thebes by P. Papinius Statius( )
9 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 446 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The Thebaid, a Latin epic in twelve books by Statius (c. 45-96 C.E.) reexamines events following the abdication of Oedipus, focusing on the civil war between the brothers Eteocles, King of Thebes, and Polynices, who comes at the head of an army from Argos to claim his share of royal power. The poem is long - each of the twelve books comprises over eight hundred lines - and complex, and it exploits a broad range of literary works, both Greek and Latin. Severely curtailed though he was by the emperor Domitian and his Reign of Terror, Statius nevertheless created a meditation on autocratic rule that is still of political interest today. Popular in its own time and much admired in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance - most notably by Dante and Chaucer - the poem fell into obscurity and has, for readers of English, been poorly served by translators." "Statius composed his poem in dactylic hexameters, the supreme verse form in antiquity. In his hands, this venerable line is flexible, capable of subtle emphases and dramatic shifts in tempo; it is an expressive, responsive medium. In this new and long-awaited translation the poet Jane Wilson Joyce employs a loose, six-beat line in her English translation, which allows her to reveal something of the original rhythm and of the interplay between sentence structure and verse framework. The clarity of Joyce's translation highlights the poem's superb versification, sophisticated use of intertextuality, and bold formal experimentation and innovation. A substantial introduction and annotations make this epic accessible to students of all levels."--Jacket

Silvae IV by P. Papinius Statius( Book )
16 editions published between 1988 and 1998 in English and Latin and held by 318 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The fourth book of Statius' Siluae, containing a preface and nine poems, was published in AD 95. The occasions celebrated range from the building of a road to the gift-giving festival of the Saturnalia, and the book is of particular interest because it was published in defiance of criticism of the first three books and because it contains a cycle of three poems in honour of the emperor Domitian, a higher proportion than in any other book of the Siluae." "This edition contains the first commentary on Book IV since Vollmer's edition of the Siluae in 1898. The introduction discusses Statius' career, the chronology and arrangement of the poems in Book IV, the title Siluae, the nature of the collection, the authenticity of the tituli affixed to the individual poems, and the textual tradition. A text with full apparatus criticus is supplied, and a facing prose translation. The commentary covers textual, linguistic, literary, and historical questions, and for each poem there is an introductory note dealing with the genre, the occasion, and (where applicable) the prosopography of the addressee."--Jacket

The Thebaid : seven against Thebes by P. Papinius Statius( Book )
9 editions published between 2004 and 2007 in English and held by 279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A classical epic of fratricide and war, the Thebaid retells the legendary conflict between the sons of Oedipus--Polynices and Eteocles--for control of the city of Thebes. ... Charles Stanley Ross offers a compelling version of the Thebaid rendered into forceful, modern English. Casting Statius's Latin hexameter into a lively iambic pentameter more natural to the modern ear, Ross frees the work from the archaic formality that has marred previous translations. His translation reinvigorates the Thebaid as a whole: its meditative first half and its violent second half; its intimate portrayal of defeat and retribution, and the need to seek justice at any cost. In a wide-ranging introduction, Ross provides an overview of the poem: its composition, reception and legacy; its major themes and literary influences; and its place in Statius' life. A nd in a helpful series of notes, he offers background information on the major characters and incidents. --Johns Hopkins University Press

"The poems of Silvae 5, the last book of the Silvae, were composed in the final years of Domitian's principate (81-96 A.D.). The book was probably assembled by an editor soon after Statius' death, and is important for its concern with the poet himself, as well as public figures and personal friends. Three of the poems are laments, including one for Statius' father, himself a poet and teacher; there is also a short poem on insomnia, and one addressed to a young man at the start of his public career."
