"Statius' Silvae, thirty-two occasional poems, were written probably between 89 and 96 A.D. Here the poet congratulates friends, consoles mourners, sends thanks, admires a monument or artistic object, describes a memorable scene. The verse is light in touch, with a distinct picture quality. Statius gives us in these impromptu poems clear images of Domitian's Rome."--BOOK JACKET

Greek literary education and Roman political reality are evident in the poetry of Statius (c. 50-96 CE). His Silvae are thirty-two occasional poems. His masterpiece, the epic Thebaid, recounts the struggle for kingship between the two sons of Oedipus. The extant portion of his Achilleid begins an account of Achilles's life and renews epic

Statius' Silvae, thirty-two occasional poems, were written probably between 89 and 96 AD. Here the poet congratulates friends, consoles mourners, sends thanks, admires a memorable scene. The verse is light in touch, with a distinct picture quality. Statius gives us in these impromptu poems clear images of Domitian's Rome. Statius published his Thebaid in the last decade of the first century. This epic recounting the struggle between the two sons of Oedipus for the kingship of Thebes is his masterpiece, a stirring exploration of the passions of civil war. The extant portion of his unfinished Achilleid is strikingly different in tone; this second epic begins as a charming account of Achilles' life. -- Jacket

"The fourth book of Statius' Siluae, containing a preface and nine poems, was published in AD 95. The occasions celebrated range from the building of a road to the gift-giving festival of the Saturnalia, and the book is of particular interest because it was published in defiance of criticism of the first three books and because it contains a cycle of three poems in honour of the emperor Domitian, a higher proportion than in any other book of the Siluae." "This edition contains the first commentary on Book IV since Vollmer's edition of the Siluae in 1898. The introduction discusses Statius' career, the chronology and arrangement of the poems in Book IV, the title Siluae, the nature of the collection, the authenticity of the tituli affixed to the individual poems, and the textual tradition. A text with full apparatus criticus is supplied, and a facing prose translation. The commentary covers textual, linguistic, literary, and historical questions, and for each poem there is an introductory note dealing with the genre, the occasion, and (where applicable) the prosopography of the addressee."--Jacket

The Thebaid : seven against Thebes by P. Papinius Statius( Book )

11 editions published between 2004 and 2007 in English and held by 268 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An epic story of fratricide and war, the Thebaid retells the legendary conflict between the sons of Oedipus - Polynices and Eteocles - for control of the city of Thebes. The Latin poet Statius chose to rework a familiar tale from Greek myth, dramatized long before by Aeschylus in his tragedy Seven against Thebes. Published in A.D. 92, the Thebaid was an immediate success, and its fame grew in succeeding centuries. It reached its peak of popularity in the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance, influencing Dante, Chaucer, and quite possibly Shakespeare. More recently, however, it has received less attention that it deserves, in large part because there has been no accessible, dynamic translation of the work into English." "Charles Stanley Ross offers a version of the Thebaid rendered into modern English. In a wide-ranging introduction, Ross provides an overview of the poem's composition, reception, and legacy; major themes and literary influences; and place in Statius's life. And in a series of notes, he offers background information on major characters and incidents."--Jacket

Thebaid : a song of Thebes by P. Papinius Statius( Book )

11 editions published in 2008 in English and Latin and held by 204 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Thebaid, a Latin epic in twelve books by Statius (c. 45-96 C.E.) reexamines events following the abdication of Oedipus, focusing on the civil war between the brothers Eteocles, King of Thebes, and Polynices, who comes at the head of an army from Argos to claim his share of royal power. The poem is long - each of the twelve books comprises over eight hundred lines - and complex, and it exploits a broad range of literary works, both Greek and Latin. Severely curtailed though he was by the emperor Domitian and his Reign of Terror, Statius nevertheless created a meditation on autocratic rule that is still of political interest today. Popular in its own time and much admired in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance - most notably by Dante and Chaucer - the poem fell into obscurity and has, for readers of English, been poorly served by translators." "Statius composed his poem in dactylic hexameters, the supreme verse form in antiquity. In his hands, this venerable line is flexible, capable of subtle emphases and dramatic shifts in tempo; it is an expressive, responsive medium. In this new and long-awaited translation the poet Jane Wilson Joyce employs a loose, six-beat line in her English translation, which allows her to reveal something of the original rhythm and of the interplay between sentence structure and verse framework. The clarity of Joyce's translation highlights the poem's superb versification, sophisticated use of intertextuality, and bold formal experimentation and innovation. A substantial introduction and annotations make this epic accessible to students of all levels."--Jacket
Silvae 5 by B Gibson( Book )

11 editions published between 2006 and 2009 in English and Latin and held by 178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The poems of Silvae 5, the last book of the Silvae, were composed in the final years of Domitian's principate (81-96 A.D.). The book was probably assembled by an editor soon after Statius' death, and is important for its concern with the poet himself, as well as public figures and personal friends. Three of the poems are laments, including one for Statius' father, himself a poet and teacher; there is also a short poem on insomnia, and one addressed to a young man at the start of his public career." "Bruce Gibson's commentary is the first to be published on Silvae 5 since Vollmer's 1898 commentary on the whole of the Silvae, and includes a critical text and parallel translation. The general introduction deals with such topics as the poetics of the Silvae, the posthumous status of Book 5, and the tradition of poems of lament and consolation. The commentary examines issues of linguistic usage and textual problems, the historical and cultural background, and aspects of interpretation such as the use of allusion and the role of genre. Silvae 5 emerges as the work of a learned poet responding to the Rome of his time whilst fully engaged with the traditions of Greek and Latin literature."--BOOK JACKET
