Ultradian rhythms from molecules to mind a new vision of life by David Lloyd ( )
8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Ultradian rhythms play an essential part at all levels of biological organization, providing timekeeping for intracellular processes, playing various roles in intracellular signalling systems and underpinning coherent behaviour in tissues and organs. They are crucial to endocrine and neural performance and in psychobiology. This book brings together the evidence for these findings. In lower eukaryotes short-period rhythms (period 30-70 min) are coupled to an ultradian clock which serves as a central timekeeper. In metazoans, similar rhythms are necessary for intercell communications, and tempo

The Division and segregation of organelles by The division and segregation of organelles ( Book )
7 editions published between 1988 and 2011 in English and held by 279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This 1988 volume provides a stimulating survey of the ways in which the DNA-containing organelles of yeast, animal, and plant cells replicate. The orderly division and segregation of these organelles is essential for the survival of all eukaryotes and is therefore a topic of importance to a wide range of biologists: from geneticists, via physiologists, to molecular biologists. The first part of the volume examines the mechanism, regulation and consequences of organelle segregation and division as studied in plant and animal cells

Ultradian rhythms in life processes : an inquiry into fundamental principles of chronobiology and psychobiology by David Lloyd ( Book )
4 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The text brings together the evidence for the fundamental significance of ultradian rhythms at all levels of organization. In lower eukaryotes short-period rhythms (30-70 min.) are coupled to an ultradian clock which serves as a central time-keeper. In metazoans, similar rhythms are necessary for inter-cell communication, and temporal coupling for the coordination of integrated functions of tissues and organs in order to provide the "homodynamics" of the whole organism. Electrical, endocrine, and behavioral rhythms characterize both wakefulness and sleep, and pathologically disordered states give rise to dynamic diseases. We can now trace a continuum from the molecular genetic, through the cellular and neuroendocrine, to the behavioral and psychosocial levels. Specialist chapters devoted to each of these topics (each with a general introductory section and some speculative discussions) are provided. Many of the results presented are recent and novel, with far-reaching consequences for our understanding of health and diseases
