Loosely based on a 15th century French legend, wherein the Devil, disturbed by the encroaching forces of Good, sends his envoys to Earth to drive the citizens to despair, whereupon they will become his willing disciples. He begins by sending his envoys Gilles and Dominique, disguised as troubadours, to disrupt the betrothal of the Lady Ann and Baron Renaud. Gilles and Dominique are to seduce the lovers, and Gilles finds himself truly in love with Ann, while Dominique first fascinates Renaud and then Ann's father, Baron Hugues. Gilles' love for Ann so displeases the Devil that he decides that he must take action personally, and thus arrives to attempt to lure Ann into a betrayal of Gilles, her one true love. He does enact his revenge upon them, only to find it renders them impervious to any further tortures he might have devised
