The nine commandments : uncovering a hidden pattern of crime and punishment in the Hebrew Bible by David Noel Freedman( Book )

9 editions published between 2000 and 2013 in English and held by 827 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a powerful and persuasive argument, Freedman asserts that this hidden trail of sins betrays the hand of a master editor, who skillfully wove into Israel's history a message to a community in their Babylonian exile that their fate is not the result of God's abandoning them, but a consequence of their abandonment of God. With wit and insight, The Nine Commandments boldly challenges previous scholarship and conventional beliefs."--Jacket
The rivers of paradise : Moses, Buddha, Confucius, Jesus, and Muhammad as religious founders( Book )

4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 800 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This important volume explores the lives of the five founders of major world religions--Moses, Buddha, Confucius, Jesus, and Muhammad--chronicling what is actually known of these charismatic men and introducing readers to the cultural and religious worlds that heard their messages. Readers in predominantly Christian lands, in addition to learning about the lives of Confucius, Buddha, and Muhammad--whom they might not be familiar with--will also be introduced to modern research now casting fresh light on the careers of Moses and Jesus. Whether studied individually or in comparison with one another, these biographies, together with a chapter on the characteristics of religious leadership, chart the spiritual rivers that continue to feed the diversity of religious expression today

Studies in ancient Yahwistic poetry by Frank Moore Cross( Book )

18 editions published between 1950 and 1997 in English and held by 583 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ancient Yahwistic poetry is a particularly tempting field of study. In this small body of literature are preserved the oldest and most creative expressions of Israel's faith. This study of ancient Yahwistic poetry by Frank Moore Cross Jr. and David Noel Freedman untangles some of the serious textual difficulties and linguistic obscurities that have been a challenge to students of the Hebrew Bible for many generations." "The results of a joint doctoral dissertation originally submitted in 1950 and published in 1975, this volume has withstood the test of time; it offers analysis and conclusions regarding the Old Testament's Yahwistic poetry that remains as innovative and authoritative today as they were almost fifty years ago. Following an important introduction to the study of Yahwistic poetry, the book focuses in detail on "The Song of Miriam" (Exodus 15), "The Blessing of Jacob" (Genesis 49), "The Blessing of Moses" (Deuteronomy 33), and "A Royal Song of Thanksgiving" (2 Samuel 22 = Psalm 18). This edition also includes new prefaces by Cross and Freedman that give their present perspectives on this classic work in biblical studies." --Book Jacket

8 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 415 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The papers published here are pioneering studies, fresh and provocative, full of brilliant detail, together yielding major advances in the analysis of Hebrew poetry ... Freedman is moved by symmetries in Hebrew poetry undetected by a previous generation of students--symmetries, or rhythms at every level: phonetic, morphological, grammatical, structural in colon, verse, and strophe. He desires as well to provide a scholarly description and notation to Hebrew prosodic canons and techniques more refined and precise than alternate systems afford. He has a sure and instinctive literary feel for his material."--Jacket

Psalm 119 : the exaltation of Torah by David Noel Freedman( Book )

9 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The alphabetic acrostic is one of the most easily identifiable poetic forms in the Hebrew Bible. Yet its very obviousness has tended to deflect deeper exploration of its structure and purpose. There is no priori reason that alphabetic acrostics should be less creative, expressive, or complex than other psalms. Thus the essays collected here investigate the acrostic format as a legitimate option for Israelite poets rather than as the refuge of uninspired epigones. Freedman focuses on the technical aspects of the psalms: metrics, syllable counts, colon length, and symmetry within the psalm. The results show that the poets' creativity functioned at all levels, from the individual line to the complete psalm." -- Back Cover
