Artificial intelligence programming by Eugene Charniak ( Book )
26 editions published between 1979 and 2014 in English and held by 1,082 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Artificial intelligence research has thrived in the years since this best-selling AI classic was first published. The revision encompasses these advances by adapting its coding to Common Lisp, the well-documented language standard, and by bringing together even more useful programming tools. Today's programmers in AI will find this volume's superior coverage of programming techniques and easily applicable style anything but common

Probabilistic semantics for cost based abduction by Eugene Charniak ( Book )
2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Abstract: "Cost-based abduction attempts to find the best explanation for a set of facts by finding a minimal cost proof for the facts. The costs are computed by summing the costs of the assumptions necessary for the proof plus the cost of the rules. We examine existing methods for constructing explanations (proofs), as a minimization problem on a DAG. We then define a probabilistic semantics for the costs, and prove the equivalence of the cost minimization problem to the Bayesian network MAP solution of the system."
A probabilistic approach to text understanding by Robert P Goldman ( Book )
2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In order to apply probability theory to this problem, we have developed a probabilistic model of text understanding. To make it practical to use this model, we have devised a way of incrementally constructing and evaluating belief networks which is applicable to other abduction problems. We have written a program, Wimp3, to experiment with this framework."
