The maze of justice : diary of a country prosecutor : an Egyptian novel by Tawfīq Ḥakīm ( Book )
128 editions published between 1900 and 2009 in 10 languages and held by 585 libraries worldwide
"Who shot Kamar al-Dawla Alwan? Was it a crime of passion? What was the role of the beautiful peasant girl Rim? Is the mysterious Sheikh Asfur as crazy as he seems?" "Diary of a Country Prosecutor is an Egyptian comedy of errors. Partly autobiographical, it is written as the journal of a young public prosecutor posted to a village in rural Egypt. Imbued with the ideals of a European education, he encounters a world of poverty and backwardness where an imported legal system is both alien and incomprehensible."--Jacket.

"Tawfiq al-Hakim, born probably in 1899, was, with such writters as Naguib Mahfouz and Taha Hussein, one of the great formative figures of twentieth-century Egyptian literature. Immensly prolific and versatile, he was the first Arab to acquire a literary reputation as a dramatist, and was the author of more than seventy plays of remarkable variety, as well as of a number of novels, short stories, and essays. He died in 1987." "This autobiographical essay, written in the simple and direct style leavened with humor for which Tawfiq al-Hakim is justly renowned, covers the early part of his iife until the mid-1930s. It represents an attempt by the author to understand himself, largely in terms of his genetic inheritance. Some readers may sense that at the heart of his relationship with his father was a demon he ultimately feared to face, but his candor produces a number of touching self-revelations. Even more substantial is the all too rare witness to the character of family and social relations in Egypt in the first quarter of the twentieth century. But most arresting and valuable of all are the author's reminiscences about the Egyptian theater in the 1920s and 1930s, providing for the historian of Arabic literature a mine of firsthand information."--BOOK JACKET.
The essential Tawfiq al-Hakim : plays, fiction, autobiography by حكيم، توفيق ( Book )
8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 144 libraries worldwide
"The importance of Tawfiq al-Hakim (1898-1989) to the emergence of a modern Arabic literature is second only to that of Naguib Mahfouz. In this volume, Tawfiq al-Hakim's fame as a playwright is given prominence. Tawfiq al-Hakim produced several of the earliest examples of the novel in Arabic; included in this volume is an extract from his best known work in that genre, the delightful Diary of a Country Prosecutor, in which he draws on his own experience as a public prosecutor in the Egyptian countryside. Three of the many short stories he published are also included, as well as an extract from The Prison of Life, an autobiography in which Tawfiq al-Hakim writes with commendable frankness about himself."--BOOK JACKET.
