The process of education by Jerome S Bruner( Book )

135 editions published between 1960 and 2009 in 8 languages and held by 2,872 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a synthesis of the "major themes, the principal conjectures and the most striking tentative conclusions reached" during a conference of scientists and scholars and educators held in 1959 where the improvement of science education at the primary and secondary level was discussed. Mr. Bruner's summation concentrates on four central problems; creating curricula and teaching fundamental structure effectively; readiness for learning and teaching with an eye to continuity and development ahead; intuitive thinking and its values; and finally the stimulus of interest with the many divisive considerations here-(the sacrifice of the gifted to the average; the question of supply and demand; the new techniques and devices; etc.) This is a clear-cut summation of many of the issues at hand and ahead which face education in general but it would seem to be almost exclusively directed at this professional group. On knowing; essays for the left hand by Jerome S Bruner( Book )

93 editions published between 1960 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 2,345 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The left hand has traditionally represented the powers of intuition, feeling, and spontaneity. In this classic book, Jerome Bruner inquires into the part these qualities play in determining how we know what we do know; how we can help others to know-that is, to teach; and how our conception of reality affects our actions and is modified by them. The striking and subtle discussions contained in On Knowing take on the core issues concerning man's sense of self: creativity, the search for identity, the nature of aesthetic knowledge, myth, the learning process, and modem-day attitudes toward social controls, Freud, and fate. In this revised, expanded edition, Bruner comments on his personal efforts to maintain an intuitively and rationally balanced understanding of human nature, taking into account the odd historical circumstances which have hindered academic psychology's attempts in the past to know man. - Publisher

Acts of meaning by Jerome S Bruner( Book )

55 editions published between 1990 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 1,725 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jerome Bruner argues that the cognitive revolution, with its current fixation on mind as "information processor;" has led psychology away from the deeper objective of understanding mind as a creator of meanings. Only by breaking out of the limitations imposed by a computational model of mind can we grasp the special interaction through which mind both constitutes and is constituted by culture. - Publisher
Child's talk : learning to use language by Jerome S Bruner( Book )

63 editions published between 1983 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 1,679 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How does a child acquire language, and what may facilitate this learning? To carry out his investigations, Bruner went to the child's own setting for learning rather than observing children in a contrived video laboratory. For Bruner, language is learned by using it. Central to its use are what he calls "formats," scriptlike interactions between mother and child, in short, play and games. What goes on in games as rudimentary as peekaboo or hide and seek can tell us much about language acquisiton. But what aids the aspirant speaker in his attempt to use language? To answer this, the author postulates the existence of a Language Acquisition Support System that frames the interactions between adult and child in such a way as to allow the child to master the basic but necessary steps in learning to talk. It underlies the fine tuning involved in orderly language learning and allows the child to proceed from learning how to refer to objects to learning to make a request of another human being. - Back cover
Actual minds, possible worlds by Jerome S Bruner( Book )

36 editions published between 1986 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,615 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawing on recent work in literary theory, linguistics, and symbolic anthropology, as well as cognitive and developmental psychology Professor Bruner examines the mental acts that enter into the imaginative creation of possible worlds, and he shows how the activity of imaginary world making undergirds human science, literature, and philosophy, as well as everyday thinking, and even our sense of self. - Publisher

The culture of education by Jerome S Bruner( Book )

44 editions published between 1996 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,388 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Going well beyond his earlier acclaimed books on education, Bruner looks past the issue of achieving individual competence to the question of how education equips individuals to participate in the culture on which life and livelihood depend. Educators, psychologists, and students of mind and culture will find in this volume an unsettling criticism that challenges our current conventional practices - as well as a wise vision that charts a direction for the future

Making sense : the child's construction of the world by Jerome S Bruner( Book )

40 editions published between 1986 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 966 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The growing child comes to understand the world, makes sense of experience and becomes a competent social individual. First published in 1987, Making Sense reflects the way in which developmental psychologists had begun to look at these processes in increasingly naturalistic, social situations. Rather than seeing the child as working in isolation, the authors of this collection take the view that 'making sense' involves social interaction and problem-solving. They particularly emphasize the role of language; its study both reveals the child's grasp of the frames of meaning in a particular culture, and demonstrates the subtleties of concept development and role-taking."--Page [i]
Minding the law by Anthony G Amsterdam( Book )

32 editions published between 2000 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 816 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Minding the Law explores crucial psychological processes involved in the work of lawyers and judges: deciding whether or not particular cases fit within a legal rule ("categorizing"), telling stories to justify one's claims or undercut an adversary's ("narrative"), and tailoring one's language to be persuasive without appearing partisan ("rhetorics"). Because these processes are not unique to the law, courts' decisions cannot rest solely upon legal logic but must also depend vitally upon the underlying culture's storehouse of familiar tales of heroes and villains."--Jacket

Making stories : law, literature, life by Jerome S Bruner( Book )

30 editions published between 1999 and 2010 in English and French and held by 735 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Making Stories, the psychologist and educator Jerome Bruner inquires into this elusive yet fundamental aspect of human nature and asks how we use it to make sense of our lives. He proposes challenging new ways to think about narrative: to understand how we tell our stories, to see how we use them to create a sense of self and interpret other people's lives, to learn how literature alters the very idea of what a story is and how law teaches us about our expectations of narrative. The result is a masterful, provocative synthesis of anthropology, psychology, literature, law, and philosophy."--Jacket
