"Based on the Georg Simmel Lectures delivered at Humboldt University in the spring of 1995, Problematics of Sociology is a distillation of Neil Smelser's reflections after nearly four decades of research, teaching, and thought in the field of sociology." "Each chapter considers a different level of analysis: micro, meso, macro, and global. Within this framework, the themes considered range over a variety of topics, including the place of the rational and nonrational in social action and in social science theory; social institutions as imagined entities; the eclipse of social class; and the decline of the nation-state as a focus of solidarity."--BOOK JACKET.

"We conceive this book to have two objectives, one academic and one pedagogic. On the academic side, the study of the relations between personality and social systems--like much of social psychology in general--has a "shreds and patches" quality. Many disciplined and theoretically relevant items of research appear in the learned journals, but seldom are they organized systematically. Most books of selected articles reflect this undisciplined character of the field. We hope we have achieved a somewhat tighter conceptual framework in organizing this book of selections. We lay out the broad lines of this framework in the Introduction and attempt to adhere to it consistently in assigning articles to their appropriate place throughout the volume. On the pedagogic side, courses in personality and society sprawl awkwardly over a number of college and university departments--psychology, social psychology, anthropology, and sociology. Teachers from each department view the subject from their own particular vantage point and sometimes neglect contributions from other areas. In this book we attempt to cover all the areas of the social sciences in which research on the relations between personality and social systems is currently proceeding. Our modest hope is that we have been able thereby to broaden the scope of many teachers"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved).

"Neil Smelser begins by tackling the fundamental problem of defining what exactly terrorism is. He shows why a precise definition has eluded us until now, and he proposes one that takes into account the full complexities of this unconventional and politically charged brand of violence. He explores the root causes and conditions of terrorism, and examines the ideologies that inspire and fuel it throughout the world. Smelser looks closely at the terrorists themselves - their recruitment, their motivations, the groups they form, their intended audiences, and their uses of the media in pursuing their agendas. He studies the target societies as well, unraveling the complicated social and psychological impacts of having to cope with the ever-present threat of a terrorist strike - and responding when one occurs. He explains what it means to live under constant threat of terrorism, and addresses the thorny domestic and foreign policy challenges this poses. Throughout, Smelser draws from the latest findings in sociology, political science, anthropology, economics, psychology, psychiatry, and history."--Jacket.
