Mondrian : the art of destruction by Carel Blotkamp( Book )

11 editions published between 1994 and 2001 in English and held by 725 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume analyzes the interrelation between Dutch artist Piet Mondrian's (1872-1944) paintings and his theories on art and life as expressed in public writings and (largely unpublished) letters. Mondrian was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neo-Plasticism. This consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors. The author concentrates on his paintings, the artist's major achievement, examining the influences that shaped his art: Fauvism and Cubism, the work of Bart van der Leck, De Stijl and the Parisian art world during the 1920s. The author concludes that Mondrian appears not as an isolated figure, but as an artist who took a keen interest in the world around him, a veritable avant-garde painter who saw his role as a creator of a new, modern culture
Piet Mondrian by Hans Ludwig C Jaffé( Book )

13 editions published between 1969 and 1970 in 3 languages and held by 717 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents a comprehensive survey of the work of Piet Mondrian, an artist who has exercised a vast influence on the art of our time - and not only on painting and architecture, but also on the minor arts: interior decoration, furniture design, advertising displays, typography, and book design. Though for many years he was regarded as the most ultra-refined of twentieth-century artists, Mondrian's pervasive presence can now be discerned in innumerable contexts - among them the pages of popular household magazines, the lobbies of apartment houses, and even women's fashions

Natural reality and abstract reality : an essay in trialogue form by Piet Mondrian( Book )

10 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 258 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mondrian saw himself as an arch-Modernist with uncompromisingly strong ideas about what art was to be about in the next century. He viewed abstraction as the ideal artistic and spiritual direction, and argued this cause in his most important text, "Natural Reality and Abstract Reality." Written in Holland at the outset of 1919 and completed in Paris in July of that year, Mondrian's Trialogue carefully presents the artist's ideas through the voices of A Layman, A Naturalist Painter, and An Abstract-Real Painter. Abstraction contains, Mondrian proposes, the essence of what art of all the ages sought to express - relationship, harmony, repose, life force, the universal. In the Trialogue, Mondrian demonstrates the basis of his new art form in visible reality. This volume also contains Mondrian's "two urban sketches" entitled "Les Grands Boulevards" and "Little Restaurant - Palm Sunday," which form ideal literary complements to the Trialogue

"The book also highlights the range of media in which Mondrian worked, encompassing drawings, prints and three-dimensional works as well as paintings."
