Wieder entführt er den Leser in die erbarmungslose Welt der sibirischen Lager und erzählt die Geschichte der Besiegten. Im Mittelpunkt steht in diesem dritten Band die meisterhaft geschilderte Ganovenwelt im Lager, ihr Alltag, ihre Sprache, ihre Sitten und ihr Verhältnis zu den politischen Gefangenen. Warlam Schalamow, 1907 im nordrussischen Wologda als Sohn eines orthodoxen Geistlichen geboren, ging 1924 nach Moskau, um dort "sowjetisches Recht" zu studieren. 1929 wurde er wegen "konterrevolutionärer Agitation" zu Lagerhaft im Ural verurteilt. 1931 kehrte er nach Moskau zurück, wo er 1937 zum zweiten Mal verhaftet wird. Es folgte die Deportierung in die Kolyma-Region um den gleichnamigen Fluss im Nordosten Sibiriens. 1956 durfte er nach Moskau zurückkehren, wo er 1982 starb
